Butch Harmon is one of the most revered golf coaches on the planet — ever, really. The World Golf Teacher’s Hall of Fame member is an inspiration for golf instructors everywhere, and has helped thousands of golfers over the course of his storied career. When he talks, we listen.
This week, the legendary golf coach appeared on GOLF contributor Mark Immelman’s podcast, and dropped a series of fascinating, hilarious and utterly brilliant pearls of wisdom he’s learned through the years. There’s so many of them, and the only way to do it justice is to listen to the podcast in its entirety. Trust us, it’s well worth you time:v
My favorite pearl came when Butch, in passing, revealed what he says is the “secret to golf.” He literally used those words, so, naturally, my ears perked up.
What’s the secret, according to Butch Harmon? It’s “repetition”:
“Anybody who loves golf should go to St. Augustine to the World Golf Hall of Fame, because there’s hundreds of strange-looking swings in there, and they all work. Because the secret to golf is repetition.
He continued by pointing to Jim Furyk as an example; someone whose swing isn’t something you’d teach to anybody, but it’s one that he has the ability to repeat on command:
“Look at Jim Furyk, he’s just about to turn 50, he still competes on the PGA Tour with a swing that … if his father had changed that swing to make it look perfect, we’d have never heard of Jim Furyk. [The legends of golf] had a lot of strange characteristics in their swing. The common thread was getting the club square at impact and being able to repeat it time and time again.”
Now, I know what you’re thinking. That “repeatability” isn’t much of a secret, because people want to know how to be repeatable. That’s the tricky part, but Butch goes on to say that your best chance is not to try and imitate another golfer’s swing, but to perfect the tools at your disposal. Work with a good coach who keeps things simple, and remember that the common thread is getting the clubface back to square at impact.

The repetition! It is easy to say and hard to do. The question is how you can repeat the same swing
all the time to generate the shots that meet your expectations. The tips that I always use are
1. Keep your hip angle throughout the swing,
2. Make sure you rotate the hips as is on your take away and backswing
3. Step on your front part of your left foot just before your downswing.
The hip angle is the angle of the femoral head and the socket of the pelvis. The golf swing is like
"the train is moving forward as the wheel turns". Your swing is to conserve the circular energy
that will generate the power to propel the ball forward.
If your hip angle is changing every time you swing the golf club, you can not repeat it.
In my opinion, taking lessen is a waste of money before you can swing the club without changing
your hip angle most of the time.

I'm very impressed with your sophistication, Dr. Ohn.
By the way, a few months ago I played golf with Dr.권영조(71), your classmate, at Laguna Wood GC.
I mentioned your name. Dr. Kwon, Dr. 조명호(62) and I, three of us are from Michigan,
and were able to get together for the first time after our move to CA just before the Pandemic.

In Feb. I played golf in Lagunawoods with Dr. Kwon and he told me that he was going to
your C.C. following Monday. We talked about you then. I did not know that
was the last time I was going to see him in a while at that time. I never thought
of the world that we can not meet people without thinking catching or spreading
the virus. I hope the world gets better before I die.

A small world, indeed.
Who knows? The world may get back to normal sooner than we think now.
I have confidence in those smart scientists who have been working feverishly.
I read about and heard in TV speaking of the principal scientists, brains, behind Moderna vaccine
and the Oxford vaccine and learned that they were working on the vaccines for years before this Pandemic.
I came away with the impression that they are well prepared for this vaccine no matter what the politicians
are saying.
I can say the same about the EIDD-2801, the promising drug that kills coronavirus effectively, whose
discoverer, Dr. Painter, virologist and chemist, was working on the drug for many years and was prepared
well in advance for this Pandemic.
I certainly couldn't help believing in these pure scientists and their sincerity.
I feel strongly that this COVID19 will be eradicated in time thanks to all the dedicated scientists around the globe.
So Dr. Ohn, perhaps you, Dr. Kwon and I may be playing golf together here sooner than we may think now.

It doesn't sound like a secret to me because I realized it a long time ago
when I was very young so that I hardly took any lessons.
I readily agree, though, with what Butch is saying.
