SILVIS, Ill. -- Michael Kim didn't just win his first PGA Tour event on Sunday. He dominated in a fashion never seen at TPC Deere Run.
Kim's prizes? A little over a million bucks, a two-year exemption on tour and a trip to the British Open.
Kim shot a final-round 66 on Sunday to win the John Deere Classic by a record-setting eight strokes. Kim, who turned 25 on Saturday, finished at 27-under 257 to break Steve Stricker's tournament record from 2010 by one shot. Kim also qualified for next week's Open at Carnoustie -- an unexpected bonus for a player who had missed five of his last six cuts before his breakthrough in the Quad Cities.
"To be able to finish out in style like this, it means a lot,'' said Kim, who nearly quadrupled his season earnings with a winner's share of $1.044 million.
Bronson Burgoon, Francesco Molinari, Joel Dahmen and Sam Ryder all finished at 19 under. Kim took all the drama out of the final round with birdies on his first three holes and secured the largest margin of victory during the tournament's stay at the course, which began in 2000. J.P. Hayes (2002) and Vijay Singh (2003) won the event by four strokes.
Kim, who had previously had just one top-10 finish in 84 career starts -- a third at the Safeway Open two years ago -- entered play with a five-shot lead. It was the biggest edge for a third-round leader at the John Deere Classic since Stricker's six-stroke advantage eight years ago.
Kim, a former star at Cal who had struggled to find his footing as a pro, made it obvious from his first swing that he wasn't about to let anyone catch him. Kim knocked in a 13-foot birdie putt on the opening hole, and then holed two more from 15 and 24 feet to give him seven straight birdies dating back to the end of Saturday's round -- and a seven-shot lead.
The field might have felt a glimmer of hope when Kim dumped his tee shot into the greenside bunker on the par-3 seventh hole. But Kim got his approach to within 7 feet and made the downhill par putt, and he walked to the next tee with an eight-shot edge.
"Even the last couple of weeks, I felt like my game was getting there,'' Kim said. "I just felt like I needed just a couple of good starts to the rounds.''
Kim surpassed Stricker's mark with a 21-foot putt on No. 16. The understated Kim finally let loose, holding his hand to his ear in a nod to a cheering gallery.
Kim's day ended on No. 18 in emotional fashion when he saw his brother, father and mother -- all of whom had made a surprise trip in hopes of seeing him get his first win -- on a video screen.
"I teared up a little bit on the green,'' Kim said. "To see my parents here ... it made me even more nervous.''

DETROIT - PGA Tour officials announced a new professional golf tournament is coming to Detroit in 2019.
PGA confirmed the place and time of the new Detroit tournament on Tuesday morning with the release of their 2018-2019 schedule.
As expected, the "Rocket Mortgage Classic" will be played at the Detroit Golf Club on June 24 through June 30, 2019. Here's the full PGA schedule.
"Professional golf belongs in Detroit," Quicken Loans CEO Jay Farner said. "The Motor City, and the entire state of Michigan, have long served as a premier golf destination with some of the best courses in the country. We will be working with thePGA Tour to make the Detroit stop one of the most exciting and engaging events on the professional golf calendar."
The club's membership recently voted to allow its board of directors to explore bringing the PGA Tour to its historic Donald Ross-designed golf course.
As part of the agreement, Quicken Loans will remain the title sponsor of the Quicken Loans National at TPC Potomac in the Washington, D.C., area in 2018.
The PGA Tour held annual tournaments in Detroit for 45 years between 1958 and 2009. An economic downturn led to sponsor Buick's withdrawal.
"It’s a market we always wanted to go back to, and we’re thrilled that we will now have that chance,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said.
Of note, I brought this news partly because I was a member of Detroit Golf Club from 1989 to 2014 and I get to see my old home course on TV once a year for the next four years per the current contract.

Since Kevin Na's win in PGA,another Korean American,
Michael Kim's victory is quite encouraging news.
Ever since he entered PGA in 2015-1016,he has been
struggling to survive in PGA and I am glad he finally
win one this week.
I like his consistant and persistant demeanor in the
course and he seems to be very intelligent player as well.
He was born in Seoul and raised at San Diago area and
considering his oustanding college golf career, I am
very confident for his future in PGA.
Thanks very much for this presentation! Dr. Lee! and
congratulation for your old club being host club for
upcoming PGA Tournament! KJ

Thanks for the comment, Dr. Hwang.
I enjoyed watching Michael winning with a wide margin
reminding me of the old days when Tiger Woods often did that.
Kevin Na won by a wide margin as well.
This back to back two wins by Korean boys is indeed a rare treat for us.
My wife and I felt that finally Korean boys seem to have learned something
from their fellow country girls of LPGA and may have decided to work harder.
Perhaps Koreans may dominate PGA as well.
All we need is to have a few Tiger Woods, I believe.

I think he had an once in a life time round. Golfer’s dream came true. I don’t think he had
any regret on any play during 4 rounds. For being a first time leader on Sunday, it was
very good thing that he led by comfortable margin. Now, he broke through the most
difficult barrier; the first win. I looking forward to seeing him playing well in the British open.
