AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods’s comeback from personal and professional adversity is complete:
He captured his fifth Masters title and his 15th major tournament on Sunday, snapping a championship drought of nearly 11 years. It was a monumental triumph for Woods, who had not won a major championship since his personal life began to unravel on Thanksgiving night in 2009, when a marital dispute led to a car accident and a succession of lurid tabloid headlines.
On the golf course, he had a series of back and leg injuries that led to an addiction to painkillers and culminated in pain so searing that, before surgery in 2017, he had questioned whether he could play professionally again.
Woods, who at 43 became the second-oldest winner of the Masters at Augusta National, after the then 46-year-old Jack Nicklaus in 1986, last achieved major success in one of golf’s four major tournaments at the 2008 United States Open.
He had come close on some Sundays to winning his 15th major over the years but could not get it done. Yet after the surgery in 2017, a spinal-fusion procedure he called a “last resort,” he began a new lease on his career. His pursuit of Nicklaus’s record 18 major championships, which seemed a foregone conclusion when he sprinted to 14 major titles in his first 11 years as a professional, is now officially back on.
Last year, Woods made 18 PGA Tour starts, his most since 2012, and posted his first victory since 2013, at the Tour Championship. He also contended in the last two majors of the year, the British Open and the P.G.A. Championship, on the way to top-6 showings at each tournament.
Those results, he said, boosted his belief that he could contend this week at Augusta National, the site of his first major triumph, by 12 strokes, in 1997. Woods, in his 22d Masters appearance, closed with a final round of 70 and finished 13 under par at 275, one stroke better than Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele.
He took the lead with just three holes to play after a birdie putt on the par-5 15th hole and held on from there. With thunderstorms forecast for the late afternoon, organizers of the Masters moved up the start times by five hours and placed players in groups of three rather than the traditional two to speed play.
But by the time the tournament leaders went into the second half of their rounds on Sunday, the wind picked up and it briefly began to rain. Both of the players with whom he was grouped in the final threesome, Francesco Molinari, 36, and Tony Finau, 29, described Woods as their childhood idols.
Both eventually succumbed to the pressure of the final round, but Woods did not. And now, after more than a decade of being stuck in place, Woods suddenly seems to have a full head of steam moving forward. The next two majors, the P.G.A. Championship at Bethpage Black on Long Island in May and the United States Open at Pebble Beach in California in June, are at courses where Woods has won before. He seems primed to do so again.

What a memorable Masters this was!
Tigers have made a lot of people happy and inspired, I believe.

(Tiger Woods’s girl friend; Erica Herman)
I never thought he would come back and win a major. He had his back fused. It is kind of
extensive back surgery and it is not common to see anybody back to normal to play just a
recreational golf. I am glad to see his girl friend watching Toger playing at Masters. I hope
he cleaned up his bad habits on womanizing.
Amen corner was not joking. On the 12th hole, players who put the ball into the water lost
their chances. They should have aimed at the bunker in front. If the shot is short of the green,
it will stay in the bunker. Otherwise, if the ball hits the front bank, it rolls down to the water.
Nick Faldo said that Jack did that every time he played that hole.

Thanks for you, gentlemen's comments!
12th hole has been main culprits in many many times.
Jordan Spieth had run away from pack until he put
2 balls in the water on 12th hole in 2016 and that
cost Jordan's repeat championship.
Molinari was bit unlucky with unpredictable wind
as well on 12th hole.
'Tiger Roar' is something else and incomparable!
With this win,Tiger jumped up to top 10 in official
money and 13th Fed Ex point.
I am pretty sure Tiger would concentrate mostly Majors
in rest of year and it is interesting to see the result! KJ

As he stood on the 12th green, glaring at Francesco Molinari and Tony Finau, Woods found the killer instinct he — and golf as a whole — had been missing.
2019.04.15 10:37
Brooks Koeptka and Ian Poulter underclubbed on the 12th hole, probably because of
unseen wind. It was completly calm. There were no waves in the water. So did Malinari
and Finau. Tiger got to hit last after seeing both putting the ball into the water. He took
shorter and safe route over the front bunker in the middle. The flag was further out to the
right. Golfing god helped Tiger this time. What if he would have hit first on the hole?

Tiger Woods surgeon exclusive: 'He was in pain 24/7 - it's incredible he can still play golf to this level' https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.yahoo.com%2Fexclusive-tiger-woods-pain-24-213000103.html%3Fsoc_src%3Dsocial-sh%26soc_trk%3Dma&data=02%7C01%7C%7C05e04bb56e8241abfb6a08d6c20a4269%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636909746645891201&sdata=kPWclweK%2B1F%2B5BA%2BuAgieYmR02%2BE7azzQhn1FUOfxYY%3D&reserved=0

Dr. Damian Fahy in England who spent a week reviewing Tiger Woods back problem
after three back surgeries picked a surgeon in Texas, Dr. Richard Guyer, to do another
back surgery, who subsequently performed anterior lumbar interbody fusion on him
followed by 6 months rehab.
Obviously enough these two surgeons are brilliant, great surgeons as well as diagnosticians,
which I further checked out with the help of google.
As a physician, I congratulate their great work in the healing profession, i.e. medicine,
which happens to have involved Tiger Woods back trouble.
2019.04.15 12:39
One of the mysteries in medicine is back pain. I have to give the credit to two surgeons
who did the surgeries and get him back to prefessional golf. But we have to see how long
it will last. Thank you for your information, Dr. Lee!
2019.04.15 13:02
He certainly has a strong mental power to endure
this long ordeal and come back to elite level to win major PGA tournament.
This should be one of the greatest coming-back stories in sport.
Thanks very much for this detail information about his back surgeries!, Dr. Lee! KJ
2019.04.15 13:04
You are welcome, Dr. Ohn and Dr. Hwang.
As Dr. Guyer explains it, the L5/S1 fusion Tiger had is the best
location for fusion because it is at the base of the spine as some people
are born with fusion there. Dr. Fahy said Tiger can continue his competitive golf
another 10 years.
In sum these two doctors seem confident in regard to Tiger's back although I don't
think any doctor can't rule out the possibility that similar problems can occur
in other parts of his spine as some of my patients have experienced.
Tiger should know he needs to take it easy with his back.
2019.04.15 23:54
To me, human back problems are the most complex health care issues.
Many of pain problems spontaneously resolve if you rest. Many doctors claim their tricks helped.
And yet some needs most radical surgery, radical decompression, screws, plates to fuse, anterior, posterior
or both, from which get most gratifying results but some patients fail.
Between each vertebra, there is a bone issue, joint issue, nerve issue, muscle/tendon issue,
---and constant movement on top of them, unless you are in complete bed rest.
Each patient could have some combination of above components, i.e. different issues in every patient.
More complex, if you have problems at more than one level.
It would be very difficult to select one best treatment option for a given clinical situation.
Hope Tiger enjoy this outstanding surgical outcome for a long time.
2019.04.16 01:29
I think the combination of the ideal location of injured spines,
skillful surgeons, and his determination and mental power
would make this successful result.
By the way, with this win, Tiger jumped up to World Rankings
to No 6 and we might see Tiger being World No 1 again sooner
than later! KJ

Wow! What a day for Tiger Woods, his fans, and whole World!
Tiger Woods(43) just won Masters again and that is his 5th
green jacket and 15th Major in total pursuing his coveted
Jack Nicklaus's 18 majors.
It is amazing to see him overcoming all those adversities
like his personal turmoils and phisical injuries to win
another Major.
Many people had doubt about his ever coming back, but I
have never doubted about that. Congratulation to Champion,
Tiger Woods and PGA! KJ
