When you talk about "American Dream," you will want to read this story about
Mike Ilitch who just died.
All Michiganians, not to mention Detroiters, know him, but this detailed summary
of his life is indeed quite a story.
I had chances to encounter him in person on a number of occasions as a treating physician
of his mother-in-law and father-in-law, both of whom died under my care.
He was a humble man even after he became a billionaire owning Detroit Red Wings and Tigers.
He was a good son-in-law and would bring his in-laws to my office himself instead of letting his wife,
Marian, do it. He gave me his direct phone number and asked me to call him direct in case of emergencies
involving his mother-in-law.
On the day his mother-in-law was having a heart attack and had to be admitted to CCU I called him, and
he came right away. When she was showing the early signs of cardiogenic shock,
I asked him to have a family meeting
and let me know whether they will let me take her to cath lab for emergent CABG asap.
Within an hour he returned and let me know the family decided to let her die naturally.
Her mother-in-law was in 70's then. She died on the same day fortunately without much suffering.
Afterwards he and I got somewhat closer, and we talked about our families.
His wife would send a basket to our house every Christmas a number of years. He would refer a number of his
employees to me for cardiac exams over the years.
Thank you, Dr. Hwang, for the comment.
Have a great trip and be safe!

A beautiful story about Mike Ilitch
Greetings from Aloha State
We just started our 5 weeks trip of Hawaii,Australia, and New Zealand at Kona,Hawaii.
We were extremely lucky to be able to leave JFK in spite of big snow storm last Thursday.
It is sad indeed to lose owener like Mike Ilitch, eventhough it is expected somewhat.
He was minor league Baseball player himself once and his dream was becoming owner of Detroit Tigers.
After he owned Detroit Redwings and he made every effort to be owner of Detoit Tigers and
finally he made it. His Redwings had won Stanley Cup Championship 4 times, but he has not been
so lucky with Detroit Tigers, although his team reached World Series twice without ring.
He was excellant and fair owner and all Detroit fans love him dearly. Too bad he could not see his
new Arena of Detroit Redwings next year.
God Bless! Mike Ilitch! and deep condolence to his family. KJ
