"Allison coined the phrase "Thucydides Trap" to refer to when a rising power causes fear in an established power which escalates toward war. Thucydides wrote: "What made war inevitable was the growth of Athenian power and the fear which this caused in Sparta."[3] The term appeared in a full-page ad in The New York Times on April 6, 2017, the day of U.S. President Donald Trump's meeting with Chinese General Secretary Xi Jinping: "Both major players in the region share a moral obligation to steer away from Thucydides's Trap".[4]"

Thucydides (/θjuːˈsɪdᵻdiːz/; Greek: Θουκυδίδης, Thoukudídēs, Ancient Greek: [tʰuːkydídɛːs]; c. 460 – c. 400 BC) was an Athenian historian and general. His History of the Peloponnesian War recounts the 5th century BC war between Sparta and Athens to the year 411 BC. Thucydides has been dubbed the father of "scientific history" because of his strict standards of evidence-gathering and analysis of cause and effect without reference to intervention by the gods, as outlined in his introduction to his work.[1][2]
He has also been called the father of the school of political realism, which views the political behavior of individuals and the subsequent outcome of relations between states as ultimately mediated by and constructed upon the emotions of fear and self-interest.[3] His text is still studied at both universities and military colleges worldwide.[4] The Melian dialogue remains a seminal work of international relations theory while Pericles' Funeral Oration is widely studied in political theory, history, and classical studies.
More generally, Thucydides showed an interest in developing an understanding of human nature to explain behaviour in such crises as plague, massacres, as in that of the Melians, and civil war.(from Internet)

I do not know Donald Trump personally but having seen him "talking and acting" so often in the media,
I feel like I know him.
From what I know, Donald Trump's action at the summit meeting was more or less accidental.
I am not sure it was done by his intentional purpose out of smart and deep wisdom he had at the moment.
To Graham Allison (the author of the article), Trump is obviously a hero.
Then, anything he does looks "heroic" to Graham.
But not to me.
To me, the tough-talking dog turned into a sissy cat in front of "fox-like" Xi Jinping.
That's what happened and there won't be any pre-emptive strike of North Korea.
Alas, our wish for the unification went sour at that moment.
It is encouraging to know, per this Harvard professor, that Donald has such brains
and skills as illustrated because dealing with Kim of NK will take the best coordinated collected brains
of South Korea, USA and China, i.e. the new president of South Korea, Trump and Xi, I believe.
