Dear friends,
The year 2017 is coming to a close and I hope you had a good year. This was our 11th year in Toero after my retirement and will be remembered by myself and all my family members as a year that marked an end to The Old Generation and a subtle change in the way of life of traditional Korean culture in our family.
My father passed away on May 12 this year at age 92. He was regarded by many as the last scholar of Korean Studies in Literature, History, and Phylosophy. He was the last defender of traditional values in a rapidly changing society but, at the same time, he never lost the keen sense of the real world.
I grew up in a family which values tradition but was also influenced by Western culture during my postdoctoral education in the U.S.A. My friends tell me that I am too conservative and stubborn but I call myself as a liberal and flexible man. This is probably why many of my friends and students have difficulty understanding me.
As the Senior of my family now, I have the duty to keep the family together and pass on the family tradition to the next generation. I will try my best but already find it tough to follow the steps of my father.
I continue to work 2 days a week at Kim's Clinic and Dialysis Unit, walk an hour, and read and write 「Confucius, The Analects」4-5 days a week.
We live in a difficult time. The world is growing warmer and evermore unpredictable. We had unprecedented stretches of heat waves during this past summer (temp. up to 39°c) and an earth-quake (5.8 in the Richter scale) in Pohang City, a South-eastern port approximately 100km from Miryang with unexpected toll.
The North Korea is threatening the whole world with nuclear bombs and missiles. I am sure there are ways to right the wrongs provided if everyone mind their own businesses and do their best and not interfere with the life of others. I hope we will all stay healthy and have a peaceful New Year.
Best wishes, from Jung Hee and Hi Bahl Lee of Toero, Korea
