At Yale, we conducted an experiment to turn conservatives into liberals. The results say a lot about our political divisions.

Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric is from Steve Bannon’s idea. He believes that immigtants will destroy
America. Certainly, it will consolidate white American voters. It is not core Republican policy.
Attack! Attack! Attack!, it is Steve Bannon’s rhetoric and Trump’s constant attack against non-supporters
will keep his supporters together. It will not make more converted Republicans.
This study shows we voters become liberals or democrats when we feel safe and
become conservatives or republicans when we feel threatened.
So Trump beat Hilary by successfully making more voters feel threatened and fearful
by saying all those bad illegal immigrants or Moslems, etc, etc.
It is indeed amazing to learn from this study how fragile the human mind is
and how easily it can be manipulated by all the political rhetorics.
Although Pascal didn't mean it that way, man indeed seems to be a thinking reed,
생각하는 갈대, changing his mind depending on the direction and the speed of wind.
The original saying by Pascal is as follows,
Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature; but he is a thinking reed. The entire universe need not arm itself to crush him. A vapour, a drop of water suffices to kill him. But, if the universe were to crush him, man would still be more noble than that which killed him, because he knows that he dies and the advantage which the universe has over him; the universe knows nothing of this.
All our dignity consists, therefore, in thought. By it we must elevate ourselves, and not by space and time which we cannot fill. Let us endeavour, then, to think well; this is the principle of morality."
