Gang Xu more specifically defined ren as "empathy", as elaborated by Confucius that "So, a man of Ren helps others become established if he desires to establish himself, and helps others reach their goals if he desires to reach his. Being able to make analogies between his own situations and those of others around him could be called the approach to Ren."
仁 = Ren
I do not know any common man or woman is a true empath. We all know that human being
should be empathetic to others. I think true love is built on empathy for each other.
It may be all that common people can do. Descent men and women are always empathetic
to others and people who are on the receiving end should always thank them.

Very interesting subject, doc, especially to the professional in medical field. Yes, I once beleived the empathy is a human nature but NOT so I learned.
Indeed, at least, I tried to remain empathetic to sharing other’s pain as same human being, regardless, but for this many human garbage we encounter in these days, I wonder how many would share the empathy with these trash peoples. Sorry to divert the story but through mother fucker Tramp, belatedly I recognized that I have no reason(?) to spare my empathetic reaction to this group of ‘human garbage’ as my nature! Rather, I pray all these human garbage who refuses to get this vaccine would be taken away by new Delta/Indian variant of COVID-19 from the earth once and for all to reduce further pollution/damage by them. I know the empathy is NOT a reciprocal reaction but that is the way I feel in these days!!!

To me, it is no surprise.
My lifetime experience tells me over the years that
indeed, a true empath is exceedingly rare, may be one a hundred,
like this article says, but fortunately for me, I have encountered
a few in my life. One of them was one of my closest friends,
Charley, an orthopedic surgeon, died of COVID-19 one year ago.
He was recognized as such by hundreds of his colleagues at our hospital
and became a source of inspiration for many.
I once used his story for my fund raising speech at a hospital function
for Cardiology Dept. It is an interesting story, a sort of confession by another surgeon,
circulating among hundreds of medical staff. When this surgeon met Charley for the first time,
he thought Charley was too good to be true. He said to himself, "you gotta be kidding me.
You must be a phony. You can't be that good."
He watched Charley next ten years and to his surprise found no change
in Charley's behavior and character, and Charley was a true empath.. Finally, he confessed to
other colleagues that Charley is too good to be true, a true empath.
About the same time, our hospital was running a radio commercial that states that
so and so hospital's quality of care is too good to be true unless you experience it, etc.
I had to give a fundraising speech in front of sponsors and to the embarrassment of Charley
sitting in the audience made Charley's example above synonymous with the quality of
our hospital care.
What is the most unusual for Charley was that he was a surgeon, a most popular and well known
orthopedic surgeon in Detroit Metro for decades. I've dealt with many surgeons
in my career and never met another surgeon I could call a true empath. I used to feel lucky if I ever
encountered emphathetic surgeon for my patients.
