Limestones are composed of calcium carbonate and most all are formed from the accumulation of oceanic organisms that make their shells of calcium carbonate. There are shallow-water marine limestones and deep-water marine limestones. ... When they die, their shells sink to the seafloor to accumulate as a "carbonate ooze".
Limestone (CaCO3) reacts with hydrogen ions in water. These are always present in water since water undergoes autoproteolysis: H2O(l) = H+(aq) + OH-(aq) The more acidic the water is, the more limestone will react and erode.
"Since Miami is built on limestone, which soaks up water like a sponge, walls are not very useful. In Miami, seawater will just go under a wall, like a salty ghost. It will come up through the pipes and seep up around the manholes. It will soak into the sand and find its way into caves and get under the water table and push the groundwater up. So while walls might keep the clogs of Holland dry, they cannot offer similar protection to the stilettos of Miami Beach."

I am sure many of you had a chance to drive through Miami Beach but whenever we have meetings, usually at the downtown of Miami, we took driving across Miami Beach to enjoy unusual scenery. But I and my wife always wondered about such high-rise buildings very next to the waterfront in view of rising water levels through the years as the result of climate change like all other peoples. Indeed, Manhattan is a different story with such rock bottom as the ground to build the high rise but such flat land of Florida is different we all know- 사상누각!!!
What a tragedy!!!

As I understood it, the Miami condo collapse
may have something to do with sea rise that made saltwater seep into
and erode the base of the building sitting on limestone, which means
climate change has something to do with it.
