I have given up on him for a few years. He was the featured player on almost every Friday
because he was hanging on the cut. His driver usually on somewhere outside fairways
and the second shots around the green. And his magical short games save a par. But he played
often on the weekends.
He was a different man this time. When other players could not find the fairways, he did.
He outdrove his playing partners who are years younger than him. He made putts in
windy conditions. He did not miss any short putts when other competitors did.
He was unbelievable on all 4 days. I was told he has been practicing meditation and lost
some weight. He grew up in Torry Pines. Now he is in the US open on merits instead of
exemption. Good luck for him on the US Open.
P.S. Pete Dye perhaps did not know he favored lefties when he designed the golf course.

(Reuters) - After winning the PGA Championship on Sunday to become golf's oldest major winner, 50-year-old Phil Mickelson said he had been inspired by the success of Tampa Bay Buccaneers evergreen quarterback Tom Brady.
Brady, who won six Super Bowls in 20 seasons with the New England Patriots, left the franchise before signing a two-year, $50 million contract with the Bucs last year, starting all 20 games in 2020.
The 43-year-old quarterback played through most of the season with discomfort in his knee but managed to guide the Bucs to their second Super Bowl title in February.
"So I'm very inspired by Tom Brady," Mickelson told ESPN.
"He's actually a big motivation, because of how hard he works to be the best and to elongate his career.
"There's no reason why at an older age you cannot be at your best," added the six-time major winner.
"It just takes a little more work. I wasn't getting the results -- but I believed it, and I had people believe in me."
Mickelson and seven-times Super bowl champion Brady teamed up for a charity golf match against Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning in Florida last year that raised $20 million for COVID-19 relief efforts.
"I want to get in another match with (Brady) because spending time with him, it's inspiring," he added.

This is an inspirational family story behind the history-making victory
by Phil Mickelsen.
Phil's sister, Tina, writes regularly stories of her brother in a golf magazine, called Fore,
which is published by Southern California Golf Association 4 times a year, and
I got to know Phil's tight family more than I cared to, so this story above
is no surprise for me and reminds all of us once again that behind a successful man
or woman there always seems to be great family support.
Phil's case is another example, I believe.
Like many golfers, I was glued to the TV to witness the historical performance.
