by Bill Phillips and the Editors of Men's Health We stand around a lot here at Men’s Health. In fact, a few of us don’t even have office chairs. Instead, we write, edit, and answer e-mails—a lot of e-mails— while standing in front of our computers. All day long. Why? It all started last summer, when Assistant Editor Maria Masters came across a shocking study in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (one of dozens of research journals we comb each month as we put together the magazine). Scientists at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana analyzed the lifestyles of more than 17,000 men and women over about 13 years, and found that people who sit for most of the day are 54 percent more likely to die of heart attacks. That’s right—I said 54 percent! Masters immediately called the lead researcher at Pennington, a professor named Peter Katzmarzyk. Turns out, this wasn’t the first study to link sitting and heart disease. Similar research actually dates back to 1953, when British researchers found that (sitting) bus drivers were twice as likely to die of heart attacks as (standing) trolley operators. Here’s the most surprising part: “We see it in people who smoke and people who don’t, ” Katzmarzyk told Masters. “We see it in people who are regular exercisers and those who aren’t. Sitting is an independent risk factor.” In other words, it doesn’t matter how much you exercise or how well you eat. If you sit most of the day, your risk of leaving this world clutching your chest— whether you’re a man or women—as much as doubles.
This raised a rather obvious question: So what’s a desk-bound worker to do? |

Dr. Bang,
Have lots of fun in Korea.
And take good care.
The above medical advices are acceptable
as long as you do your regular aerobic exercises
to prevent varicose veins and venous insufficiency.
If you don't do the vigorous exercises such as jogging,
brisk walking, biking, etc, on regular basis,
you will likely develop varicose veins or venous insufficiency
and dependent leg edema in later years,
which may lead to deep vein thrombosis
and pulmonary embolism, which can cause sudden death.
As a matter of fact, I've seen many career women and men
who suffer from venous insufficiency and leg swelling because
they've neglected to do the countermeasures, which is
the regular aerobic exercise.

You're quite right, sun-bae-nim.
I clearly remember one Board Exam question as a case study.
It was about one young long distance driver who came to the
ER with sudden onset of Chest Pain and Short of Breath.
As you already guessed, it was Pulmonary Embolism.
It was 1978, a pretty long time ago
but it was a good question, looking back.

Doc, a good article and a good warning to us all !!
I walk 500-600 miles a year on our golf course. It's a lot of exercise for me.
But everyday for hours, I am stuck sitting at my desk with my eyes glued to the screen and keyboard.
I felt like someone just threw at me a cold water shower to wake me up.
At least, every so often (maybe every 30 minutes or so), I will have to get up and walk around.
Thanks for an wakeup call.

WM,
Just like the guy in the above picture,
you'll have to hire a carpenter to redesign your working desk
with your computer on.
If you can't afford doing that, all your alumni friends and their spouses
on this page have to make a formal request to our assn for the expense
because that is the least our assn can do to help you.
I'm half serious.

especially for most of us sitting front of computer
for hours each day. Thanks.
I probably still not changing my habit of sitting
front of computer, but certainly will try more
frequent breaks in between.
Good luck! Everyone! KJ
