1. Global Warming

Climatic changes being experienced today are believed to go on for a few more years with things getting worse each year. According to those who believe that global warming will be the end of humanity, extreme weather will then set in leading to droughts, changes in animal patterns and diseases. These changes could also result in a number of things that would then make the earth inhabitable such as famine, political instability and eventual collapse of the ecosystem.

2. Nuclear War

The tension between countries with and without nuclear capabilities is at an all-time high. Currently, about nine countries already have armed nuclear heads while only 5 subscribe to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This means that the four left can do whatever they please with the nukes, and that is what makes nuclear war a possibility. If such a war were to start, it would only need about 100 nuclear launches to bring about nuclear winter which is characterized by extremely low temperatures. By the time it hits 1000 bombs, the entire world will be wiped out.

3. Fungal Infection

Scared of bacteria? Think again because you can always treat bacterial infections with anti-biotic but not much can be done when it comes to fungal ones. According to David Wake, who is a curator at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, fungal infections can be extremely scary. He compares an outbreak in humans to be as severe as what has been experienced across the US where frogs are dying from the chytrid fungus. Managing such an outbreak would be impossible, and humans will be gone just like that.

4. Eruption of a Super Volcano

Scientists also say that it is possible that the earth would come to an end courtesy of a volcanic eruption. In fact, they believe that a similar eruption is responsible for the extinction if the dinosaurs and 95% of the world’s species some 200 million years ago. Considering that there is already a super volcano measuring 34 by 45 miles boiling under the Yellowstone National Park that erupts every 600,000 years, this is expected to happen anytime. Moreover, it has already been 640,000 years since its last activity. When it goes off, it could have the same effects as a nuclear winter.

5. A Falling Asteroid

Asteroids have destroyed the earth in numerous fictional movies, but that does not mean that it cannot happen in reality. A large meteoroid is believed to have a destroyed over 2000 square kilometers of the Siberian Forest in the early 1900s and scientists say that the possibility of an even larger asteroid falling cannot be ignored. Furthermore, astronomers know very little about the solar system, and we may note able to see it coming.

6. Biological Warfare

Although natural diseases may also be able to wipe out the entire earth’s population, engineered diseases can do so even faster. If a biological war was to begin, then it may be very hard for the human race to survive. Considering the effects of an engineered version of bird flu H5N1 that hit the headlines in 2011, scientist say that a similar disease but on a larger magnitude has the potential to obliterate the earth.

7. Overpopulation

The rate at which the earth’s population is growing is quite alarming. At the moment, there are more than 7 billion people alive with more being born each day. This is what has led to many people thinking that there will come a time when they will start dying of starvation due to the stress that would have been put on the available resources. Even though scientist say that the earth finds a way to readjust to the changing demand for resources every 50 years, we still cannot rule out the fact that starvation and struggle is inevitable.

8. Black Holes

When the Large Hadron Collider came on, it marked the beginning of a new era in technology but that did not come without worries. This collider can result in a tiny black hole that could slowly but steadily suck in everything and destroy the earth. Even though scientist argue that the particle accelerator may not be powerful enough to do that, advancements in technology could make it possible to build an even bigger particle accelerator later on which will suck in the earth.

9. Gamma Ray Attack

The earth’s atmosphere plays a key role in keeping us safe. However, when two stars collide, they can emit energy in the form of a gamma ray burst that is ten quadrillion times more what the sun emits. Such an amount of energy will destroy the ozone layer leaving us exposed to UV rays that would then finish up the earth.

10. Robot Takeover

Technological advancements have led us to a point where artificial intelligence is getting smarter by the day. As a result, computer scientists believe that in the next say 40 years, robots could actually take over leading to the extinction of mankind.
