The woodpecker constructs the holes on the tree trunk that are snuggly fit
acorns to consume during winter. If it is too big, it will fall out.
If it is too small, it can not be inserted.

What a lovely social and clever bird!
I learned something new thanks to you, Dr. Ohn.
I had nothing but nightmares regarding woodpeckers in Michigan.
Woodpeckers used to make holes on wood shingles eventually ruining
much of the entire wall windows of my wife's art studio by rain water
seeping through double pane glasses, costing me $5000 before our house sale.
What made them stay away from the wall was a decoy hawk at a cost of $20.
I got the tip by googling.
I was in constant war against raccoons, woodpeckers, squirrels, deers, wolverines,
rabbits. Finally I gave in and decided to share the residence although they cost me
tens of thousands for repair when my wife and I decided to sell the house to come to
CA. We miss the place and all the wild animals especially all the birds.
