Nature [Memoirs of Summer] Lower Mohawk Lake, Breckenridge, CO

Lower Mohawk Lake Breckenridge Lower Mohawk Lake (11,861') and Upper Mohawk Lake (12,110') are located just .4 miles apart along the south flank of Mt Helen. Visitors will enjoy a rapid climb through subalpine forests, lengthy stretches of open tundra and sensational views en route. Those with extra time may divert to nearby Mayflower Lakes, or continue past Upper Mohawk Lake on unmaintained routes to benefactors Lake #3 and Lake #4. Trailhead: Drive south out of Breckenridge on U.S. 9. At about 2.4 miles from the last light as you leave Breckenridge you turn right on Spruce Creek Rd. and proceed for about 1.2 miles to a well marked parking area and trailhead. If you have 4-wheel drive, you can continue up the road for another approximate 2 miles to cut the walk down. Round-Trip Length: 7 miles - includes both lakes Start-End Elevation: 10,390' - 12,110' (12,250' max elevation) Elevation Change: +1,720' net elevation gain (+2,010' total roundtrip elevation gain).  여기에 Breckenridge 스키장이 있다 (Peak 8, 9, 10 의 오른쪽, 즉 동쪽 사면이 스키장).  북쪽의 큰 산이 Mount Helen (13,164 ft / 4,012 m)  Trailhead 부근의 길가에 쓰러진 고목의 보호로 Heart-Leaved Arnica 한가족이 같이 자라고있다. 흔히 고목사이에서 이런 flower colony를 보는데 죽은 고목도 후세를 위해서 이런 역활을 하는듯...  알지 못하는 새인데, 우리가 앉어서 점심을 먹으니 혹시 얻을게 있나해서 온것 같다. 이들은 아마 오랜 세월의 경험으로 사람들이 앉었다 떠난곳에는 먹을것이 떨어져있다는것을 아는지? 이럴때는 새뿐만이 아니고 다람쥐도 주위를 빙빙 돈다.  나는 언제나 오래된 햇볓과 비 바람에 바랜 이정표를 좋아해서 사진을 찍는다. 어느 오랜 세월동안, 얼마나 많은 사람이 보면서 지나갔을가? 그 역사의 한 점, 드디어 오늘은 내가 지나간다.  Continental Falls 가 멀리서 보인다. 앞에 보이는 급경사를 올라가면, 바로 그위에 처음의 호수인 Lower Mohawk Lake이 있을거다.  Another old sign post  오른쪽 끝에 보이는 Continental Cabin, 왼쪽에는 지붕없는 old cabin의 잔해. 여기는 1800년대 후반에 금광이 발견되어 잠시 몇년간 성시를 이루었다가 사라진 곳이다. 후세 사람들이 오른쪽의 옛 통나무집을 다시 고쳐서 지나가는 여름 등산객이 비와 번개를 피할 자리로 마련하고 겨울철에 Cross country skier들이 들려서 밤을 지내고 갈수있게했다. 속은 흙바닥이지만, 안에는 쇠로 된 통나무 때는 난로가 있다. Colorado에는 이런 cabin이 군데 군데 있어서 침낭만 메고 가면 잘수있게 된곳이 많다.  Parry Gentian이 길 옆에 피어있다. 요새는 고도 10,000 feet이면 어디를 가나 이 꽃을 본다. 꽃나무 사이에 Pocket Gopher가 땅을파고 들어간 흙더미가 보인다.  Lower Mohawk Lake밑에있는 Continental Falls의 윗부분.  같은 폭포의 중간 부분. 생각보다 웅장하다.  역시 같은 폭포의 밑 부분.  이 신선한 물은 곧 골짜기에서 Spruce Creek이 되고, 몇마일후에 Blue River 로 합친후에 Breckenridge를 지나 Dillon Lake(Reservoir)이 된다. 그 다음 더 북쪽으로 약 40 mile 내려가서 Kremmling에서 Colorado River의 상류와 합친다. 그런후 Colorado를 지나고 Utah, Grand Canyon, Arizona를 지나 California에서 바다에 도달하기전에 물 한방울 없이 없어져 버린다.  앞에 보이는 Continental Cabin. 한참 급경사를 올라와, 다음 급경사전에 여기에서 쉰다. Welcome to Continental Cabin, 11,402 feet, circa 1883, the last bastion of freedom in this here Summit County. May the peace of these surroundings be felt by you and yours while you stay. The cabin was saved from filth and decrepitness on October 21, 1989 for the purpose of nothing more than sheer enjoyment.  Mayflower Lake으로 Lower Mohawk Lake가는 길 북쪽으로 있는 호수.   쓰러진 통나무 사이에 핀 Heart-Leaved Arnica 꽃들. 이 고도에서는 벌써 여름 철이 다 지나가니, 이것이 아마 마지막으로 피우는 꽃이리라.  한 구룹의 Sun-Loving Pussytoes (?)가 길가에 생생하게 피어있다.  Lower Mohawk Lake에서. 산너머 호수건너 뒷쪽위로 2,000 feet만 더 올라가면 Pacific Peak (13,950 ft / 4,252 m)이 있는데 1979년 3월에 동기 등반으로 정상까지 올라갔었다. 그래서 그런지 이곳이 더 정다웁다. 자세히 보면 호수건너 바위 slope에 오른쪽으로 가느다란 실개천이 바위사이로 흘러 내려온다. Upper Mohawk Lake에서 내려오는 물이다.  호수 건너서 올라가며, 동쪽으로 내려다 본 경치. 여기에서 Upper Mohawk Lake은 300 feet 고도로 더 높고, 0.4 mile 거리다. 이제는 나무가 없다. 즉 12,000 feet를 넘었다는 얘기. Tree line이 여기에서 끝난다. 이때 Camera Battery 소진의 경고가 나왔다. 허, Camera도 battery도 끝난다. 어젯밤에 battery를 charge 했던걸로 기억했는데, 내 나이에 그 기억을 믿은게 잘못이였다. Data from the Internet, Photo by SNUMA WM - August 15, 2012 |

Obviously, Doc,
An old sign post signifies that our life are insignificant momentary visitors just passing through.
I am pretty sure that a lot of people feel the same.
The old cabin in this webpage is almost 130 years old.
Imagine how many people passed through it and never came back again.In this particular case, I might go back there again to finish my picture taking of the Upper Mohawk Lake
and for a nostalgic view of the Pacific Peak one more time. -

더운 여름에는 북족으로 여행을 가고, 겨울에는 따듯한 남쪽으로 여행을 가면
피서, 피한을 할수 있을 것으로 생각했는데, 높은 곳으로 올라 가는 수도 있네요..
그런데, 높이 올라가려면, 강한 다리와 튼튼한 심장과 폐가 바쳐 주어야겠습니다.
아름다운 경치였습니다.
We broke the historical records in the largest number of days over 90 degree F.
It was a good thing that we have a lot of high altitude lakes where it feels like cool spring or autumn.
Over 10,000 feet, the lake water is almost freezing cold.
So, here's another cool day in August.
It was a good thing that I stayed off the golf course.
