Wildflowers of Boreas Pass July 23, 2011 Boreas Pass, elevation 11,492 ft (3,503 m), is a high mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. The pass is located on the continental divide, at the crest of the Front Range. It divides the headwaters of the Blue River (a tributary of the Colorado River) to the north with South Park and the headwaters of the South Platte River to the south. The pass was formerly known as Breckenridge Pass in the 1860s, when it served as an early route for thousands of prospectors during the Colorado Gold Rush who crossed from South Park to look for gold in the valley of the Blue around Breckenridge. The road over the pass goes north from the town of Como in the northern South Park northeast of Fairplay, crossing the path northward to Breckenridge. In 1882, under the direction of Sidney Dillon of the Union Pacific Railroad, the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad (by then controlled by the Union Pacific) begun laying narrow gauge tracks up the pass, which Dillon renamed in honor of Boreas, the Ancient Greek god of the North Wind. The line was abandoned in 1937 by the Colorado & Southern, along with most of the company's right-of-way. After World War II, the Army Corps of Engineers reconstructed the route for automobile traffic. When there's no snow, the road is easily passable by regular cars. (from Wikipedia)  Breckenridge 쪽 (북쪽)에서 Boreas Pass 로 가는 길에서 보이는 야생화 꽃밭. 이미 고산지대로 주로 침엽수인 Spruce들만 자란다.  Aspen Sunflower. 뒤에 보이는 산이 Bald Mountain (13,684 ft / 4,171 m).  Aspen Sunflower들이 옆을보고 서있다. 곤충들이 쉽게 꽃에 앉을수있게 바람 방향과 반대로 고개를 돌리고있다.  앞에 Aspen Sunflower, 중간의 푸른색 꽃은 Larkspur.  Aspen sunflower and Blue Flax  Blue Flax (앞) and Aspen Sunflower  Aspen Sunflower (yellow) and Larkspur (blue)  Bald Mountain을 배경으로  Larkspur (dark blue)  Alpine Avens (yellow) and White Geranium (흰색)   Western Golden Ragwort  Golden Aster  Alpine Avens    배경의 산들은 Ten Mile Range에 속하며 중간의 뾰족한 산이 Pacific Peak (13,950 ft / 4,252 m)    길가에 핀 꽃들. 가는길에 차를 세우고 내려서 사진 찍는다. 내가 10년 넘게 타고다닌 Chevrolet Blazer 4 wheel drive. 나와 함께 어려운 산길을 많이 다닌차다. 작년 10월에 Hyundai Santa Fe 차와 바꿨다.  언제 죽었는지 모르는 고목 밑에 피어난 Scarlet and Yelow Paintbrushes.  Scarlet Paintbrush (붉은 색) 와 Yellow Western Paintbrush (노란색)  10-15년만에 한번 피고 죽는 "Old Man of the Mountain"   양지쪽 사면에 핀 Scarlet Paintbrush 들    Boreas Pass의 정상이며 동시에 미국대륙의 분수령 (Continental Divide) 로서, 여기의 남쪽 (Town of Como 방향) 물은 South Platt River 를 통해서 대서양으로 흘러가고 북쪽 (Breckenride 쪽) 물은 Colorado River를 통해서 태평양으로 간다.  1800년대 말과 1900년대 초에는 이자리에 Town of Boreas가 있었고, 주로 철도회사 일꾼들이 겨울에 눈을 치우기 위해서 살었다. 이제는 완전히 Ghost town이 된지 오래며, 국유림 관리청이 남은 건물들을 보수해서 보존하고있다. 건물 하나는 화장실로 쓰게 만들었다.  1882년에 가설된 좁은 철로길의 잔재. 기차 한칸과 철도의 몇 남은 부분을 기념으로 남겨둔듯. 1937년에 이 지방의 광산들이 문을 닫자 철도는 버려지고, 2차대전후 미국 정부에서 철도를 뜯어 버리고 자동차 길로 개조했다. 그것이 오늘날 남아있는 Boreas Pass Road.  배경에 보이는 눈 덮힌 산맥은 Ten Mile Range  누가 언제 했는지 모르지만. 지나간 추억을 더듬듯이, Railroad Crossing Sign을 부쳐 놓았다. 이제는 아무것도 남지 않은, 한없이 넓고 평화스러운 고산 Alpine Meadow에 증기 기관차의 기적이 들리는듯하다. 가끔 구경온 사람들이 차를 세우고 여기저기 서성거리고, 자전거와 Hiking 하는 사람들이 지나간다.  Ghost town of Boreas 가 있던 자리. 넓은 고산의 평지는 지금 야생화로 가득 차있다. 연방정부의 국유림 소속으로 여기는 아무도 개발하지 못한다. 사진에 보이듯이 여기가 나무가 자랄수있는 한계가 된다. 조금만 더 올라가도 (12,000 feet이상) 나무가 없다. 아직도 지난 겨울의 눈이 군데 군데 남아있다. 배경에 보이는 Boreas Mountain (13,082 ft / 3,987 m).  북쪽으로 보이는 Bald Mountain (13,684 ft / 4,171 m)  작은 노란꽃들은 대개 Alpine Avens, 큰것은 Daisy or Dandelion 계통. Ten Mile Range and Gore Range (farther) in Background.  산림청만이 아니고 개인단체에서 와서 이렇게 역사적인 옛 유물을 열심히 보존한다. I've never lived in countryside or mountainous area when I was growing up
but I had to walk over a small hill to my elementary school as well as to my middle school.
It was a small hill and field even to that young aged child but I have a fond memory
of walking through the field of yellow radish flowers(무장다리꽃) and wild flowers(들국화).
In summer time there were abundant butterflies and dragon flies in the air
and I chased after them with no reason to catch until I was out of breath with sweat.
Oh, there were grasshoppers too and we, with my friends caught them
and strung them in a straw and carried home as if it were a trophy of the day.
I have no recollection of their ending after I got home, though.
Your photos of the wild flowers in the Boreas Pass remind me of those summer days of my childhood,
even though the magnitude is not even close in comparison.
Except that it's as beautiful and precious as yours.
Thank you for bringing me back to my childhood summer days,
as vividly beautiful as the scenery of your Boreas Pass. -

승자 님, Magnitude를 얘기하셨는데, 미국의 규모는 한국인으로서는 상상키 어렵게 큽니다.
Denver 시내에서 Rocky 산맥의 분수령 (언덕 넘어가는) 까지만도 64 miles (100 km, 250리)로,
한국으로 말하면 경기도를 동서로 거의 가로 질러가는 거리이죠.
사진에서 보듯이 Boreas Pass와 그전후의 광대한 텅 빈 땅들이 전부 국유림으로 보호되어있지요.
It is the home of the wildflowers and wild animals.
It's a great priviledge for us to visit the place and enjoy the beautiful nature.
I always say to myself... "Why didn't I come up here more often?"
This year, finally, I have cut down on golfing and hiked the mountains much more often.
I am thinking of creating a local Korean alpine club and do it in a regular schedule.
Our place is too precious to enjoy only by a few people.
