I met a group of "Yong-Dahms" (Blue Gentians) near the trail to the Bong-Suh Temple. This is a wildflower blooming in the late fall, running a symbiotic relationship with "Ho-Bak" (zuchini) bees. When the sun sets and the temperature drops, the bee would fly into the flower to avoid coldness of the night. The flower closes her petals for the night to protect the bee. While being there, the bee moves and rubs around pollinating the flower with pollens that she brought from outside on her body. By having done that, she pays back the lodging fee for a night. In the morning, when temperature rises, the petals open again. Then, the bee flies out humming (saying good-bye) happily for another day's honey and pollen hunting. (Here, I assumed the worker bees to be females, even though biologically they may not be exactly females.) |

This flower is a "pleated gentian" in America.
You can see in a few of my wildflower-hiking series in our website.
It' amazing that the same flower is in Korea.
I didn't know there is such a story behind it.
For a flowering plant, pollination is such a critical part of life.
