..... I was resting at the summit ridge just below the final summit cone.
From there, I was able to see both north and south.
To the south was the long steep wall down to much lower and smaller peaks of the
southern Ellsworth Ranges without much attractive sceneries.
I sat between rocks which were carved by the wind and ice into shapes of fine comb.
Some of the sedimentation rocks were splitting into smaller pieces.
It was very unusual rock formations.
This was, ironically, the first time I actually touched the land mass of the Antarctica
since we had been on this continent all these time without ever touching
the underlying soil or rock. he snow and ice was just too deep.
Even after all the extra clothing, I felt chilly but better.
I moved down under a small rock to avoid the easterly wind.
As I was resting, my mind seemed to be getting clearer.
To the north, I was able to see the breathtaking view of the Ellsworth Mountain Ranges.
Beyond Mount Shinn (4,801m), both Mounts Epperly (4,600m) and Tyree (4,965) were
standing majestically in bluish gray tone just below my eye-level.
They were truly awesome.
To the northeast, a smaller group of mountains, Segers (2,460m), Farrett (2,400m),
and Levack (2,670m), were also visible farther away.
They were in much warmer reddish color and appeared to be getting buried into
the rest of the antarctic plain. From where I was, I felt that I was far higher than
any other mountains I could see except the very summit of Mount Vinson (5,140m).
This was the same scene which was described by the British climber Chris Bonnington
in 1983 as one of the most beautiful sights he had ever seen.
Indeed, it was. I knew now why he had said that.....
