Mount McKinley's Alaska name Denali is restored by Obama 31 August 2015 From the section - US & Canada The northern face of Denali. The early morning sunlight hits the summit area at about 2:00 AM. This picture was taken by someone I do not know. I know this scene so well because I took the exactly the same picture during the all-night-descent on foot on the Muldrow Glacier in the night of July 5, 1979. I noticed this picture at this Internet news. This picture makes my heart flutter... It was 36 years ago. - by WM.
After decades of controversy, the name of Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America, has been changed back to its original native Alaskan, Denali. The 20,237ft (6,168m) peak was named by a gold prospector in 1896 after he heard that William McKinley had been nominated to become the US president. US President Barack Obama announced the change ahead of a three-day visit to Alaska to highlight climate change. But Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner has denounced the move. The new name Denali translates as High One or Great One and is used widely by locals. "With our own sense of reverence for this place, we are officially renaming the mountain Denali in recognition of the traditions of Alaska Natives and the strong support of the people of Alaska," US Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said in a statement announcing the change. The statement went on to note that McKinley had never set foot in Alaska. Alaska has been attempting to change the name to Denali for decades. However, its attempts to change it at a federal level have been blocked by Ohio, William McKinley's home state. Politicians there criticised the name change, with Mr Boehner - who represents Ohio's 8th congressional district - saying he was "deeply disappointed". "There is a reason President McKinley's name has served atop the highest peak in North America for more than 100 years, and that is because it is a testament to his great legacy," Mr. Boehner said. Another Republican, the Ohio Senator Rob Portman urged President Obama to find another way to preserve McKinley's name in the national park where the peak is found. But the Republican Senator for Alaska, Lisa Murkowski, who campaigned for the change, tweeted she was "honoured" to recognise the mountain as Denali. McKinley was the 25th president of the United States. He was assassinated early in his second term in 1901.

This spot must be one of the park's shuttle bus stop where you can get out and watch the sceneries while breathing pristine Alaskan air. The dirt road visible at right is the Denali Park road that starts from the town of McKinley ending at Wonder Lake. This picture is one of the unusually nice pictures of the mountain. For a visitor, the chance of seeing the mountain this clear is less than about 1 in 4. On my second visit to Denali National Park, I wasn't able to see the mountain at all due to heavy clouds. But I knew "She was there." Denali is one of the most precious treasures of "America the beautful."

The Athabascan Indians lived in this area hundreds of years (or maybe even thousands).
They saw the majestic single solitary mountain arising from the central Alaskan plains
and they called it "Denali" (meaning "The Big One").
Then in 1896, some gold digger called it "Mount McKinly" after the name of an Ohio senator
who was for the gold standard.
Somehow, the new name got stuck and stayed that way ever since.
I am really glad that Obama restored the name to the original Indian name of Denali.
Denali is rightfully theirs not ours in the lower states that include Ohio.
I know personally that "any and all" mountain climbers call the mountain as Denali.
And, also, the name of Mount McKinley National Park was changed to "Denali National Park" long time ago.
Now, I can sleep better knowing that an injustice by the white people had been corrected.
The Athabascans got their own name back !!
No presidents had ever been brave enough to have done such thing before.
Obama has done it because he is Obama !! Only he can do such thing.
