Longtime Napa resident Kyungtak Minn passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, November 26th. He was 73 years old. He was born near Daejeon, in what is now South Korea, to Hyunggi Minn and Doho Song. His childhood was marked by the turmoil of World War II and of the Korean War. He attended over a dozen primary schools, some held in refugee camps. Happier memories included learning classical Chinese from his grandfather and fishing in streams and creeks. He attended Kyunggi High School (Class of 1959), and completed medical school at Seoul National University (Class of 1965). In the decades that followed, he maintained strong ties with his alumni networks, attending reunions and organizing group travel. He served as a medical officer in the Vietnam War as part of South Korea's Marine Corps. He emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1969 to pursue a medical residency in psychiatry at McGill University. His decision to move to Montreal was motivated in great part by his love of the French language. He and his wife Patricia were married in 1972. They shared a deep appreciation for the arts and would go on to travel the world. They enjoyed learning about diverse cultural and artistic traditions. The couple moved to Napa in 1977 with their three young children. Dr. Minn worked as a staff psychiatrist at Napa State Hospital for over two decades, and took on subsequent positions as a physician and administrator in hospitals and corrections facilities in Ohio and throughout California. Dr. Minn had a remarkable array of hobbies, interests and projects. These included ancient Chinese and Korean pottery, landscaping, computer programming, poetry, photography, brush painting, blogging, world history and classical music. He was known for his tremendous work ethic, boundless energy, quirky sense of humor, and constant generosity. He approached any new challenge with confidence, self-reliance, and his unique brand of unconventional ingenuity. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Isabelle, Sandra and Pierre; his siblings Seungja Yim and Kyungjae Min; his grandsons Sébastien and Xavier; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial gathering to celebrate Kyungtak Minn's extraordinary life will be held at Tulocay Cemetery (411 Coombsville Road, Napa) on Sunday December 14th, 2014 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Dr. Minn's memory be made to Doctors Without Borders. |
