This trip was 10 years ago. Then, "The Wave" was not well known to general public.
The Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) does not publish any information about this place.
Only a few hikers found this place by words of mouth and there were hardly any information in the Internet.
Now, it is well known and everyone wants to go there but the entry to this site is severely restricted.
Despite of some changes in entry-permit application rules, the limit is still 20 persons per day
and maximum group size is 6 persons. I visited this memorable place one more time since then.
This is the first in a series of three "most" memorable places I visited in Utah.

The Wave, a secret place in America

The Wave: 수억만년전에 이지방에 흐르던 강밑에, 차근차근 겹겹히 층층히 싸여진 모래가 땅밑으로 들어가 바위가 된후, 다시 지각의 융기 (롴키산맥과 같이)로 높이 올라온후 서서히 풍화작용에 나타난곳이다. Utah와 Arizona 경계선에 위치한 Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness 에 속하는 Coyote Buttes area에 있는곳이다. 이 지방은 Bureau of Land Management (BLM, 미국 토지공사)가 다스리며, 바위가 약해서 보호가 필요해 입장이 제한된 곳이다. 들어가기위해서는 4개월전에 에약 허가를 받어야하며, 하루에 전부 20명 이하만 허용되며, 한 구릅이 6명을 넘지 못한다.

The Wave: Many many million years ago, a river was here accumulating sands in layers. This area turned into sandstone and then pushed up high with the rise of the Rocky Mountains. The sedimentary rocky strata became exposed after the erosion by wind and rain. The Coyote Buttes area is located in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness between Utah and Arizona and managed by BLM. The entry to this area is severely restricted due to the fragile nature of these rocks. One needs advanced reservation (4 month ahead) and permit. Only 20 persons per day is allowed and a group size is limited to less than 6 persons.

*October 24, 2005: 이른아침에 사막은 약간 쌀쌀하다. 건조하고 쉬원한 사막의 공기와 푸른 하늘이 이처럼 좋을수 없다. The Wave를 향해 말러버린 사막의 강 (Desert wash)위로 걸어들어간다. 어제부터 6명 구릅으로 여행한다. 최병구, 김신일, 김성수, Jean Kim, Donna Alley and Luba Leef (both from Las Vegas).

*October 24, 2005: It's chilly in the early morning in the desert. The dry and cool air of the desert with the blue sky were wonderful. We are walking on a dry creek bed toward "The Wave". Since yesterday, we are traveling in a group of 6 hikers: Ben Choi, Shinil Kim, Steven Kim, Jean Kim, Donna Alley and Luba Leef (both from Las Vegas).

*Small Wave: 처음에 잠간 길이있더니 곧 길이 살아지고, GPS, 멀리 보이는 산에 의지해 사막과 바위위로 남쪽을 향해 걷는다. 약 5 km후에 Utah에서 Arizona 州 경계선을 넘어, 세개의 큰 바위덩어리로 된 "작은 Wave"에 도착. 오는도중에 이미 비슷한 바위들을 봤지만, 이렇게 깨끗하고 아름다운 바위에 놀랜다.

*Small Wave: There was a trail in the beginning but it soon disappeared. We are walking toward south, relying on GPS, and the target mountain far away. After 3 miles' walk, entering into Arizona from Utah, we are at the "small wave" made up of three rocky pinnacles. We have seen similar rock formation on the way in, but are surprised to see the clean beautifully layered rock.

*두 날쌘 climber, Luba 와 김신일이 참을수 없다는듯이 기어 올라갔다. 멀리 뒤에 배경이 "Coyote Buttes"이다.

*진짜 "큰 Wave"를 향하여 다시 올라가기 시작. 이 바위에서 떨어져 나온 모래덤이들이 군데 군데 있다. 약한 바위가 끊임없이 깍겨저 간다. 일부분은 우리 발밑에서 부서진다. 들어오는 사람수를 제한하는 이유가 바로 이건가 보다.

*Walking up again toward "The Wave", the real one, through the sands that was shed from the rock. The weak rocks are being eroded. Some breaks under our feet. That's why the number of visitor are restricted.

*드디어 "The Wave"에 도착. 바다의 큰 파도와 같다. 바위 surfing 할 사람있나? 어떻게 이렇게 自然히 만들어졌나?

*Finally we are at "The Wave". It's just like a big wave at the sea. Anyone for rock surfing? How can this be made naturally?

*지난주에 내린 비로 물이 차있다. 병구가 멀리 건너편 바위위에 앉어있다.
*Water between rocks due to the rain last week. Ben is sitting far away on another rock across.

*나와 신일, 바위파도 사이에 서서.

*꿈같이 이상한 환경에 최면술에 걸린겄처럼 취해 여기 저기 걸어본다. 병구 빼고는, 우린 이런데는 생전 처음!
*Walking around in a hypnotic stance at the dreamy place. Except Ben, we've never been in a place like this!

*점심 시간. 아침에 사온 McDonald Hamburger. 멀리 산꼭대기 위에 구멍난 "자연 arch" (石橋)가 보인다. 점심후 올라가기로 한다.

*Time for lunch. With a McDonald Hamburger. At the far summit, a natural arch (bridge) is visible. We are planning to climb after lunch.

*Wave 안에서, 신문이나 잡지에 가장 잘 나오는 장면. 드디어 우리가 그안에 서있다.

*Standing in "The Wave", most popular scene in newspapers or magazines. Now, we are there.

*가까이 보기.
*A close-up.

*나의 오늘의 명작 사진. "죽장에 삿갓쓴" 김신일의 검은 그림자가 정상 부근에서 먼 사막을 내려다 본다. 무어라 말할까? 멀리 멀리, 소년시절의 한국으로부터 찾아온 나그네? 이제 어디로 가는가?

*My best picture of the day. With a walking stick and a hat, Shin is looking down the desert from near the summit. What should I say? A traveler, came far from the boyhood in Korea? Now, where is he going?

*산 꼭대기의 Arch에 도착해서 기념사진 한장.
