LPGA.com counts down to the end of 2014 with the LPGA Tour's top 14 stories of the year. Join us as we look back at the year's most memorable milestones. Read about the Putt Heard Around the World in Story No. 5. Whether it was the shot of the year or not, the list surely doesn’t go much further than Paula Creamer’s “Putt Heard Around the World.” Creamer’s 75-foot eagle on the second playoff at the HSBC Champions snapped a three-year, 79-event winless drought. “It might be one of my favorite wins, and that's going -- taking a pretty big leap right there,” said Creamer.“ But you know, it has, it's been almost three years and you know, so much has happened…It has been coming and it just shows you perseverance. That's why I love the game. I work hard for this reason. And holding that trophy, gosh, it was so nice.” Creamer shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday to force the playoff with Munoz who finished with a 2-under 70. Creamer said she was having flashbacks to the 2012 Kingsmill Championship, where she lost in a 9 hole sudden-death playoff to Jiyai Shin, and promised herself she would not let it go that long again. So forced with the decision to lay up on the par-5 after Munoz had or to go for the green with water left and bunkers front, Creamer went for it. Munoz hit her approach to 10 feet and Creamer was just looking for a solid lag to “six or seven feet” to put the pressure on Munoz with her birdie putt. Creamer got a lot more than applied pressure, though, watching as the putt traveled way up the bank and came down straight into the hole, setting off a celebration that brought her to her knees in tears of joy. |
If I have to pick two most emotional wins of LPGA in 2014,
I would not hesitate to pick this and Christina Kim's win.
When Jiyai Shin beat Paula Creamer at 9 hole playoff in 2012,
I was happy for Jiyai, but extremely sorry for Paula.
If you go to any LPGA tournament, you could easily recognize
Paula Creamer is one of the most popular players.
Ever since she won coveted US Open in 2012, her drought of
victory had been continued until her 75ft unbelievable eagle
winning putt at HSBC in 2014. KJ
Congratulation! Paula!
