LPGA.com counts down to the end of 2014 with the LPGA Tour's top 14 stories of the year. Join us as we look back at the year's most memorable milestones. Read about the American resurgence in Story No. 10. The 18-10 thumping the Americans took at the 2013 Solheim Cup on American soil courtesy of the Europeans might not have been the impetus for 2014. Perhaps it was simply American talent maturing or an off week, but either way, it certainly didn’t sit well with the American players. With an entire offseason to mull over the thrashing – and second straight time the Solheim Cup had returned to Europe – the Americans came out blazing in 2014 and the red, white and blue golf revival continued throughout 2014. Jessica Korda got the party started at the season’s opening Pure Silk Bahamas Classic with a win and Paula Creamer took the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore a month later for American wins in two of the first six tournaments of the season. That’s when the American resurgence really got rolling, with Lexi Thompson winning the Kraft Nabisco Championship to start a streak in which Americans won nine of the next 11 tournaments. On the season, 13 times an American won with nine different American winners with three of those being Rolex First-Time winners. American players won each of the season’s first three majors with Thompson winning Kraft, Michelle Wie breaking through at the U.S. Women’s Open and Mo Martin putting on a spectacular comeback at the RICOH Women’s British Open. Stacy Lewis when asked midseason about the American resurgence since the loss in Colorado put it succinctly: “For all the Americans, I sure wish it was a Solheim Cup year.” She’ll get that in 2015, and it’s setting up to be quite the formidable United States team that will head to Germany in 2015. 12 American players finished in the top 30 on the money list. For comparison sake, the United States currently has nine players ranked in the top-25 in the Rolex World Golf Rankings. Europe has just three. But team competition’s a different animal, and Europe will certainly come in confident after their last two wins. To be determined whether this American resurgence will mean anything come mid-September 2015 in Germany. |
Stacy
