American Society of Civil Engineers 는 이운하를 One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World |

Being on a big ship is not necessarily a good thing.
I guess they are making the ship larger and larger to get rid of the conventional (wrong, however) concept about the ship.
People think ships are too confining, boring after a few days, getting sea-sick, and probably having nothing else to do.
Those are wrong idea. No matter how small a ship may be, if you are willing and ready, it's a place of a lot of fun.
The most memorable epic journey I had was on a small 60,000 ton "Royal Princess" about 15 years ago.
It was her last cruise just before she was to be converted into a cargo ship.
It was one of the first series of cruises we had after my retirement.
We left Cape Town of South Africa and then cruise through South Atlantic, South Gergia Islands, Falkland Islands,
and then went through ice-bergs of the Antarctic, Drake Channel, Cape Horn, Ushuaia via Magellan Straits,
and the fiords of southern Chile to Valparaiso, Chile in 24 days.
Only small ships can go through the maze of rocky channels in the southern tip of South America.
In a small ship, one meets the same people everyday. It's an intimate and very friendly trip.
On a jumbo ship like Allure of the Sea, you may never see a same person again.
If you love meeting and intermingling with people, small ships may be better,
but if you want personal solitude and privacy, larger ship may be your cup of tea.
The Royal Princess we took was decommissioned after the last trip of ours,
and another ship came out under the same name afterwards.
A brand-new jumbo Royal Princess comes out this year. It's one of the biggest ships by the Princess Cruises.
We went into the Panama Canal from the Atlantic side upto the Gatun Lake.
We've never crossed the canal all the way in a ship but visited the Pacific end in another cruise later,
and then took a land tour along the canal about halfway up to make it complete.
Just like Dr. Y.C. Kim, I was impressed and surprised to see large Korean ships in the canal.
Seeing a huge cargo ship with the "Korean flag" in the canal was somewhat dreamy, unbelievable, and fantasy-like.
Yes, thinking back, if a 감자바우 촌놈 like me was able to be there, then why not a Korean cargo ship?
The largest ship we took was the Queen Mary II at 148,000 ton. It was the largest in 2005.
It has the largest ballroom dance floor about the size of a basketball court. Never ever seen one like that.
Here's a picture of two of us in Her Majesty's Dance Floor of Queen Mary II in April, 2005.
Hey, we were young and even a bit glamorous (??) then !!
Please, kindly forgive my 주책없는 bragging. Nowadays, I don't have much to brag about in a retirement village.
