East and South Africa I have seen. Note by K. Minn
For those who cannot read Korean, I am writing this bilingual note.
On March 17, 2013, Sunday evening, I arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, in east Africa. It was already dark.
When I was coming out of the plane, suddenly, I felt my new shoes were very tight.
Soon I found my lower legs and feet were swollen with slight pitting edema. I realized that I was up for 23 hours
since I left my home in California without lying down.
That made my leg swelling up. Surely, it was a physically demanding trip.
An old memory came back. This has happend oncce when I was in Navy officer training course in 1965 when
we had to do daily phsyical exercises witht heavy M1 rifle. I rembemer the last day of running and climing a mountain
in Jinhae Navy base in Korea, with an ambuence follwing us to pick up those who could not make to the top of the mountain.
During this trip, I noted some travellers chose a business class seat not to ruin a night sleep and health.
I was lucky not to get into an ambulence this time.
I had a vague expectation from this expensive trip to the east and south Africa from California.
I wanted to see how people live there, in "developing" countries, to see those animals roaming freely in the natural habitat,
to find out what kind of place our ancestors lived before they came out of this continent millions of years ago,
to see political changes in South Africa, and to see how the human history is evolving there.
Fortunately, I saw more than what I expected. I have no regret over the physical stress I went through to finish
this rare and difficult trip, thanks to careful planning by Asia Travel and Tour in NY, especially Ms. Chung.
This was my 4th trip with this company: Turkey, India, Patagonia/S. America and thisAfrica trip.
New York Asia Travel & Tours company
Patagonia ,
This trip raised my interest in our human origin especially after my recent trip to Arizona Petrified Forest National Park
where I spent some time to look at carefully those charts of Evolution of living things on this planet, as burried in fossils.
I began to think again our place in the history of evolution on this earth. How we are living with the all the
animal instinct we inherited surrounded by living things that shared this plant for millions of years.
We are surrounded by several hundreds of parasites, insect, bacteria, fungus, wild animals, that see our human body as their food.
Some prefer our live body as their food: all the virus, parasites, wild beasts, but some like our dead body meat.
Unfortunately, we still have an instict to kill each other, as an individual or a group, or enslave others just like we treat
domesticated animals for labour or meat. Are we not struggling with our many inherited instictual traits with laws, education, training, moral and religious teachings?
I spent most of my youth in Korea, 1941-1968 when the country was in successive wars in farming country or in war ravaged cities,
Busan, Daejun, and Seoul.
We used to live in a single room with five family members. In the county side where there was no running water or electricity.
During the war, I remember going school on bare feet to save rubber shoes, like other village kids. Just before entering school yard,
we began to wear shoes. I learned how to make straw sandals from my grandfather. We used to mill barley with a large rolling stone
grinder turning around by an ox. New crops of small amount of rice was crushed in a stone mould by my grand mother.
In another words, we lived through the period of Stone Age and and industrialized modern age during our short span of 70 years.
Some African countries are going through the same stages we went through, I realized.
I saw many childfen on bare feet and saw their mud walled house.
I have seen images of my own childhood in many African villages.
I also noted enormous change of political scene in Africa over the past half century.
History was moving slowly in the African continent.

We went to Arusha, a border town going to Tanzania, where Serenngeti nation park is located.
These national parks were paid hunting grounds in old days. Now they serve as tourist attractions and
became a source of national income.

Serengeti means "endless pasture".

Tanzazanian village Kindergarden class and the building, which looks like a chicken cage.
My old school classroom had no wall either, just under a pine tree as the school building became a refugee camp, in 1950.
Many childrenin in Africa have no shoes. No electricity or running water.
Tanzazanian village
Dr. Bang,
I drop in this site often, even in Africa.
But I could not talk (write) here recenly.
I found out thanks to Dr. Hwang that it was due to my upgraded Internet Exploler 10 (IE10).
1.
Problem was that I could not go back to IE 9, as I could not erase IE 10 from the control panel. I searched
internet and found out many others had the same problem with IE10, so they went back to IE9.
Please do not upgrade your Internet explorer without prior preparation!
Microsoft is very irresponsible company!
They simpley say IE 10 is fast and better and ask us to upgrade, free of charge, without telling all the risks
inviolved. Many people could not communicate with government web site with IE 10 as the government did
not upgrade their site.
I used window 7 for a few years. My computer slowed down so much and it took more than half an hour to
turn it off and turn on took at times 20-30 min. I brought it to a repair man who erased everything and
restored to factory default. They make such a defective program.
Meanwhile my data and files were all scrambled.
What a nightware!
3/5 our family members changed their computers to Apple computer system.
Furthermore, now Microsoft new version Word, Excell, etc is good for only one computer.
You need to buy 2-3 copies e.g. desk computer, laptop, and your office!
The company killed all other companies, Lotus 123, Wordperfect, etc. They have now total monopoly and they
abuse the consumers!
2.
I have been busy with the problem with deers, ticks, beavers, flees, fox, and racoons,..
My country property got invaded by deers and they are ruining all the trees I planted. I had to wrap every tree with
chicken wire. I got biiten by an insect, looking like a spider, which turned out to be a deer tick. The bite wound
won't heal and I became dizzy.. turned out to be a Lyme's disease.
Beavers also blocking my water way which required lots of extra work.
I have construction wood piles. I harvested them in our propertyour back yard.
One day I noted several cat size animals playing around in the yard when we came back after our trip.
They disappeared into the wood tile.
They turned out to be wild fox family nesting in our back yard. That was okay.
But I found out the whole area near wood pile became flea infested.
My daughter's dog visited us and the dog brought in those fleas into our house.
I have to fumigate the whole house, but my wife is afraid of "chemical poisoning".. I am stuck!
I thought I became a lotus specialist having mastered how to grow lotus from the seeds. I have now beautiful
lotus flowers in Napa home back yard. But mosquitos are breeding in pond. Wee put the chlorine and
nearly killed the lotus, but they survived.
TV news keeps saying now we have West Nile virus infestation in California. The virus infected birds are
dropping from the sky! I have to get rid of the pond with lotus.
But, I found out the county is distributing free "mosquito fish" .
I got about 30 free fish and I put inthe pond. They ate all the mosquito larvas in a day!
What a miracle!
Then next event occured. On the third day, I found out night animals came into the pond destroyed many
lillies and lotus, to catch those fish!
Finally I had to build a special lotus cage, animal proof, which solved my headache.
Here is the lotus cage in front of bamboo groove.
Fish are very happy and no bird can come in.
Fox nest site, exposed to sun to kill fleas?
