Hanshanzi, Tang Dynasty Delightful is the road to Cold Mountain - And yet there is no trace of cart or horse. Impossible to keep the track of this network of ravines, Or to know how many layers of doubled cliffs. Weeping dew - a thousand kind of plant; Moaning in the wind - a solid stretch of pines. This is when you lose your path, And your form asks your shade where to go. ANOTHER TRANSLATION What a road the Cold Mountain road! Not a sign of horse or cart. Winding gorges, tricky to trace. Massive cliffs, who knows how high? Where the thousand grasses drip with dew, Where the pine trees hum in the wind. Now the path’s lost, now it’s time For body to ask shadow: ‘Which way home?’ 解說(해설) |

After reading the poem, I thought of my past.
At one time during my younger age, I used to be a "寒山子".
That is, I used to visit "cold mountains" and either followed or led my shadow on snow.
거기에는 수레바퀴 자욱도 말 발자국도 없었지요. ㅎ, ㅎ, ㅎ.

Congratulations for your having been a little "寒山子" a long time ago.
Come to think about my "me and shadow" connection, I don't have any real memory
of having seen my own shadow. I must not have been interested in my own,
not as much as in Hanshan's.

I guess you must have been a "綠山子" where under trees, you couldn't see your shadow.
That is much easier way of pursuing your hobby.
It's a lot of fun playing with Chinese letters.
We can always make a lot of nice custom phrases off our minds and intentions.

Thank you very much for this honorable title. I am deeply flattered.
I would introduce myself an English description, possibly "a green hill dweller" rather than "a green hill hermit".
Once I tried to claim "a naturalist", but hurriedly gave up it after my visit to "David Thoreau's cabin
in Walden Pond.
송담스님 once offered me a Buddhist name, "友松(우송)", meaning a friend to pines.
Afterwards I used it as my penname.
綠山子(녹산자) is certainly too lofty for me, being only a common and secular fellow.
I will keep this thought of 綠山子 as of now.
