(Lessons learned: General Mcarthur’s dismissal)
If Truman listened to McArthur, many Koreans think that they might have had
one pro-American government. Was it realistic?
I thank Truman because he saved millions of lives and part of our mother land
from the destruction of nuclear war.

As 이승만 was rallying whole nation to attack the north, American people
was shouting to soldiers “come back home”. They don’t want the war to
continue after their hopes for soldiers coming back home for X-mas on
1950 shattered. McArthur had promised the soldiers would go back home after
X-mas offense that would make North Korea vanish on the surface of the planet
on Thanksgiving day 1950. Some American families, instead, received dead bodies.
”why should we fight for the country we don’t know where it is in the map?”
That was what they are saying. However, both 이승만 and McArthur wanted to
attack the North Korea and China. 이승만 advocated “멸공통일” and he refused to
sign on the Armistice. 이승만 was telling us that McArthur was right for “멸공통일”.
This is what I think that why Koreans blame Truman for the existence of North
Korea.

Thank you, Dr. Ohn, for these presentations, which certainly
help us better informed of the circumstances surrounding the Korean War.
We Koreans certainly should thank both gentlemen, MacArthur for his swift, brilliant
military decisions in early phases of the war and Truman for his wisdom
being able to see farther into the future and the courage to exercise his authority
as the commander in chief against the national hero even though it was politically
very negative for him.
