In my premed school days, I had a chance to read the Homer’s Iliad by Penguin Edition. It was one of the greatest ancient war stories. However the most impressive passage was the narration by Glaucus, one of Troy fighters, to his opponent, Greek Diomedes. I hope you enjoy the passage.

Like leaves on trees the race of man is found, Now green in youth, now withering on the ground; Another race the following spring supplies; They fall successive, and successive rise: So generations in their course decay; So flourish these, when those are pass'd away.

Then Glaucus and Diomedes entered the space between the two armies. Both men were eager to fight;
Diomedes was the first to speak, and he said in a loud voice:
“Who among the mortal men are you, my good friend? I have never seen you in battle until today, but now you have far surpassed all other Trojans in courage, since you have stood up to me and my spear. Unhappy are those whose sons have stepped out to face me…
So I wouldn’t presume to fight with the blessed gods. But if you are a mortal and eat what the earth produces, come closer now, the sooner to meet your death.”

Then Glaucus spoke out in answer to Diomedes,
“Son of Tydeus, why do you ask who I am? Men come and go, just like the leaves in their seasons. The wind scatters one year’s leaves on the ground, but the forest bursts with new buds as soon as the springtime arrives, and it is the same with men: one generation comes to life while another one passes away.
So generations in their course decay; So flourish these, when those are pass'd away. But if thou still persist to search my birth, Then hear a tale that fills the spacious earth…

When Diomedes heard about Bellerophon, grandfather of Glaucus, he was overjoyed and said, “Amazing! You are the guest-friend of mine, from far back in our grandfather’s time, since my own grandfather, CEneus, once entertained yours, Bellerophon in his palace and kept him for twenty days, they also exchanged magnificent gifts of friendship.
Now let us exchange our armor, so all can see that our grandfathers’ friendship has made guest-friends of us also.”

이제 글라우쿠스와 디오메데스는 두 군대사이 공간으로 들어왔다. 두 사람은 전투하기에 열중하였다;
