Nanostim Leadless Pacemaker / Dave Fornell

Nov/Dec 2013, Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiology

At the 2013 scientific sessions of the Heart Rhythm Society in May,
one of the most innovative technologies presented was the Nanostim leadless pacemaker.
The tiny device, about the size of the tip of a pen, is implanted via catheter inside the heart. It attaches to the wall of the right ventricular apex with a screw in active fixation mechanism.
The small size of the device allows for percutaneous placement through a sheath in the femoral vein using a steerable catheter. This pacemaker eliminates leads and everything else involved in the conventional pacemaker implants. It is fully retrievable and can be easily repositioned during the procedure. The mean procedure time was 28 minutes, much shorter than that of the conventional pacemaker implantation.
Data from the 33 patient trial showed a successful implant rate of 97%. The average lifespan of the battery longevity was 8.5 years at 100% pacing or more than 13 years at 50% pacing.
FDA approved its investigational device exemption pivotal clinical trial protocol. St. Jude Medical which helped to fund the company to develop this pacemaker announced that it is acquiring the company.
