A lot of seniors including myself are taking ace inhibitors or ARBS
for hypertension or other reasons and should have more than a passing interest in this
controversy. It appears certain that the entry or invasion into the lungs
by the virus is through the ace 2 receptors or ace2 located in the lung epithelial cells
which ace inhibitors and ARBs block and might make the virus invasion more facilitated according to
some treating doctors in China and elsewhere.
The official position by several Cardiology institutions and reputable cardiologists
is that there is no such evidence and the patients should not change or stop
these drugs. The fact of the matter is that nobody knows for sure.
They are all saying that stopping or changing the drugs may wind up increasing
CV risk.
I wonder, however, there may be a room in certain individual patient for negotiation
when there is a simple alternative to these drugs.
The controversy is well covered in all aspects in the above two review articles.
