Relation Between HDL Cholesterol and Survival to Age 85 in Men

652 men(mean age 65) were selected. They were grouped into three,
depending on their initial HDL cholesterol level: less than 40, between 40 and 50,
and greater than 50.

They were followed until survivors reach age 85(the end of follow up was July 1, 2008). Information on co-morbidities, life style factors, measured lipid parameters, and medications were collected during triennial visits.

Each 10 mg% increment in HDL cholesterol was associated with a 14% decrease in risk of mortality before age 85.
After adjusting for co-morbidities, LDL cholesterol and life style factors, men with HDL cholesterol over 50 on initial measurement had a 28% risk decrease for dying before 85 compared to those with HDL cholesterol less than 40.

In conclusion, after adjusting for other factors associated with longevity,
higher HDL cholesterol levels were significantly associated with survival to 85 years of age.
