More specifically genes controlling cholesterol and triglyceride
were linked to Alzheimer's.
This is not surprising to me yet makes me feel good because
I have suspected it for many years and have recommended to
my patients with hyperlipidemia for an aggressive control
not only for the prevention of CVD but for the prevention of Alzheimer's.
In my book this kind of dementia belongs to so called vascular dementia
which may be preventable and treatable by the aggressive management of the
elevated cholesterol and triglyceride.
When an elderly patient undergoes MRI of brain for different reasons, more often than not
radiologists report small vessel disease related ischemia of white matter which the clinicians
consider normal for the age.
This was discussed once in Mayo Clinic Proceedings as an evidence of CVD and a potential
cause for dementia.
This genetic study certainly sheds a light upon this area connecting lipids to Alzheimer's.
It is interesting and puzzling to note that some patients with hyperlipidemia would develop dementia
as they get older but no cad, major strokes or other pad.
Right now I'm aware of two elderly Korean MDs who had had severe hypercholesterolemia for many years
have clearly developed dementia but no evidence of CAD or other clinical vascular diseases.
