Note from Dad and Mom

Quite some time ago, I made those video movies. I was the generator and recorder.  I did not check those for a long time, and during my several movings, I did not throw those away. Those days when I made these movies, it was very expensive and with lots of effort. Maybe not many of your friends have these kinds of movies ( 8-mm film movies). Luckily I transferred these (film movies) to the video movies later time by using a movie projector on the white wall and recorded by using a videotape recorder and video camera. You can see those movies here, that was before the video recording was available. Apple pick video is one of them, you can hear movie projector sound and you were much younger than other video movies.

Those days, fathers who made film movies must be fancy and wealthy fathers (recorder, projector each $1000). When the video player from RCA came out on the market, it was the table-top model and was very heavy, and it was only for videotape players (we enjoyed lots of Korean drama). Later when the video camera came out, I was one of few early buyers and I connected the camera to the recorder using a cable, so some of the recording here, such as the snow sledding video, I had to take my heavy table-top machine out to front yard (snow-covered) and I connected my video camera to the recorder using a long cable in the cold weather. A couple of years later, carry-on recorder (2 pieces of machine  $2000 ) which were portable so I bought, most of the recordings done by these machines. That was not all.  Soon 3-in-1 piece recorder and camera came out in the market($2000), I bought. Also later I bought a mini video camera- recorder ($1500) and I recorded Louise's school play. It was small and lightweight.

Those machines were new and very fancy, it was very expensive in Korea. My friend visited Korea and on entering, he was asked to hand-carry out those recorders and cameras at the time when he leaves Korea (otherwise they will charge heavy tax, it was highly profitable in Korea). It was recorded on the passport as a condition, but he forgot it and put those in the luggage bag, so he could not get out from Korea until his wife came to the USA and sent video machines back to Korea, then he was able to get out.

If I put all the money I spent for those machines into Apple stock, maybe it could worth a nice house in California now.

Because of that history and my expensive hobby, I could not throw away my products, I showed them to Emmabelle and Dashiell a few weeks ago, and they were very much interested. They seem to really enjoy seeing their mom was their age. Also, you both enjoyed seeing your own piano plays. So I decided to transfer to some kind of digital format.

It could be a simple thing if I sent to a professional place ask to transfer all of my tapes to a USB card. Regardless of the cost, I didn't need all of them, I didn't know which one I would need, I had to do edit and delete some of those, which would be a time-consuming effort.  Also, my tapes were very old and some of those were ruined and cut and broken boxes, so they might not be playable, and I did not know whether they can be even fixed to play.

So I challenged myself.  (1) Fixing the broken Tapes:  I opened the VHS tape box. Once I unscrewed 5 screws and opened them, every little piece sprung out at the same time, I could not figure out which is which and where to start. I realized those VHS boxes are all different by different manufactures and by different time, so my old RCA  VHS tape box may not be even available to get, so I opened the later tape box which I had golf tournament recording, and I was able to put my old tape in that box to play.  (2) My next problem is to repair my temperamental VCR player, not to chew my tapes. I had a rough time fixing those.

Finally, I was able to play repaired VCR tapes on my big screen TV. Since I didn't have a remote controller for the VCR machine, it was not a comfortable thing to watch a long tape(also pictures were moving due to handheld recorder; recorder position was not fixed at the time of recording), so watching gave me lots of eye pain and a real headache.   (3) I found out recordings should be done by i-pad (better than i-phone), I didn't have a tripod for i-pad, but I found the way. So I turned the TV volume loud and recorded using my i-pad.   (4) The next problem is from i-pad to my notebook computer. That was very tricky, since the apple product camera may be special, its quality is so good, its volume input to a computer is too much, my computer rejected to take those(high volume to accept). I found the hard way that if I re-boot both i-pad and my note-book, it will take only one recording under 1 hour, so I had to do a tedious job to move all of the recordings from my i-pad to my computer.  (5) From a computer to a USB card was also a task. I had to do some minimum editing job, otherwise, movie format makes too much volume for USB card, so I used free(only 7 days) software to convert movie form to MP4 form, and do the minimum editing job (very difficult: spent a lot of time and effort and frustration).  (6) Mom asked me to cut certain portions of tape simply she did not like her look or her saying on the recording, I had a really hard time erasing those.  (7) I needed a dark and sound-proof room to record, in reality, I closed my working room door and turned the TV volume higher and during nighttime recording only. Day time recording showed bright window shadow(even curtains on), it was visible on the recording.  (8) While I was doing the above tasks, I risked my favorite Sam Sung notebook and i-pad, few times I almost broke them (be non-functional).

Nobody around me seems to know to solve my problems. Finally, I did it myself.

I have few things to mention. You may not like all or a certain portion of the recording. Your children or your future grandchildren may appreciate it. You can edit or delete if you want.

While we were watching these, mom and I realized, we had lots of effort and love for you guys, you were also good children, and you paid us back with all the pleasures. We love you and your children and will love you forever.

Before you show these to your family, you should review them at your easy time. Some parts may not be comfortable to your husband or children. Do not spend too much time watching at one time, you may get a real headache and eye pain (poor quality picture and moving scenes). I spent quite a time putting the heading, so it may help you. Start with the one you are interested in and you may like.
