Dear Dr. Hwang and Bang ( Hope my spelling is correct!)
Apology first on my ignorance with my blunt but honest/straight forward comment against Korean custom/culture of modesty among 'educated' people. But I have to tell you that I read the essay Dr. Bang wrote with mixed feelings of ambivalence based on my 10 year 'personal' experience back in '90.
Indeed, as one of them/Koreans sharing same genes, I painfully confirmed the fact once again that Koreans have such unique gene: "SACHON DDANGSAMYUN BAEAPPUDA!!" during my tenure in Seoul through the era of '90. I was so offended with such unfair behavior based on bad gene among Koreans - SASAEK DANGJAENG?- from the first day after 25 year absence to the last till I left Seoul in 2004 after 10 year service to SamSung Medical Center. Of course I relentlessly criticized harshly whenever I have a chance only to humiliating them. My name/reputation I left behind was equal to my open curse(?), CHOSUNNOM, many still get upset with my such condemnation.
Because, I was so upset to learn I by myself also helplessly sharing same bad gene soon I arrived in Richmond in 1968 to start a new life in new world with different standard- I left Seoul in my age of 30 soon after appointed to YUGUP JOKYO, one step before Instructor at SNU Surgery Dept to start 2 year official trip to the U.S. for the fellowship at MCV, Richmond-, but as a reborn(?)/retooled American, BB Lee ( Not as Korean 이병붕), I was able to control this bad gene at least - I extend my personal support to many young Asian colleagues in vascular surgery, of course, including Japanese descendants as well through decades - and couldn't stand their way of behavior with full of jealousy. Since I got back home in 2004, I simply shun away from all the comm spoken and/or written in Korean alphabet whenever I have a chance till NOW only to remind my bitter sweet memory of Korea. Love and hate! BB Lee

Dear Dr. Hwang and Bang
"통영에서 바라보는 다도해는 한국에서 제일 아름다운 풍경입니다 " as well as "여러 가지 형태의 요리로 나오는 굴 정식 "reminds me of my last visit to Southern sea coast of Korean peninsula I organized two months before I left Korea; it was indeed my personal trip only for the pleasure, for the first time since I came back to Seoul for SamSung in 1994. It was indeed, simply marvelous to stop over many small towns especially in southwestern part of JOLLADO. Not only beautiful nature- I agree it is as good as if not better than any other places around the world in my opinion- but the food of JOLLADO was too good to believe. So I told my wife that if I really have to retire in Korea, there is no other place but JOLLA NAMDO along the seashore. So I strongly recommend to Dr. Bang NOT to join the group tour but take a week to drive around YOSOO-SUNCHON area to enjoy the food no other place can match- I know too well because my family is from KYONGSANGDO with worst food though I was born in Seoul. BB Lee
P.S. I also would like to share my unique experience with genuine seafood no other places, even in Italy, I had through my recent trip to Puglia, the heel portion of Italy peninsula. Indeed after I gave a keynote lecture, etc to IUP( Interntional Union of Phlebology) Congress in Rome last April and I extended the trip to Puglia my wife always wanted to visit (Puglia is THE exclusive place Italians take the vacation). My close friend, Prof Mattassi in Milan who claims my personal travel consultant, arranged detailed itinerary for a week to select the places and hotels besides the places to visit, etc. But the highlight was famous SEA FOOD, freshest ever, directly from the fishing boats including oyster, anchovies, mussels, squids, octopus besides seafood salads, seafood linguini, seafood risotto, etc, etc! One week was simply too short to try all the restaurants another friend in Bari Univ carefully selected for us.

Dr. Hwang, I have no desire nor intention to keep spilling my negative view on Koreans but regretfully, my brain erased all the memories belong to my tenure for 10 years, almost, in Korea EXCEPT bad painful memories- according to the psychiatrist of my multidisciplinary team ( I still hold biweekly clinic for vascular malformation and lymphedema at George Washington Univ with my protégé) it is quite pathological since the nature erases bad memories first for self protection. So my reaction might be pathological!). It is now more than 10 years since I came back to the Hopkins in 2004 and moved to Georgetown Univ till lately but such bad memories did not go away - my wife says because, I am so narrow minded!-. Naturally, I simply do not want to talk, read, and hear about anything involved to Korean affairs since I left Korea. I had enough with them and no more! Indeed, whenever I see my Korean friends ( I meet only my high school boys in town regularly) with such nostalgia only with good memories, I am zealous and envy them to keeping only good memories!
Indeed, the trip to '다도해 ' was organized only two months before I left Korea ( Feb 29, 2004) to bring some good memories to Korea as well. Yes, I like beautiful countryside, good food (except KYUNGSANGDO), and humble local people like all other Koreans do but I simply could not digest their arrogance especially their anti-American mood!
BW, BB Lee
