Bonds often lose market value when interest rates rise. As interest rates climb, so do the coupon rates of new bonds hitting the market. That makes the purchase of new bonds more attractive and diminishes the resale value of older bonds stuck at a lower interest rate, a phenomenon called interest rate risk.

You can resell your bond. You don’t have to hold onto your bond until it matures, but the timing does matter. If you sell a bond when interest rates are lower than they were when you purchased it, you may be able to make a profit. If you sell when interest rates are higher, you may take a loss.

실리콘 벨리 뱅크(SVB)는 이자율이 지금보다 낮은 때에 많은 본드를 삿다. 

연방은행이 인프레리숀을 줄이기 위해서 이자율을 올렸다.  SVB는 많은

하이테크기업을 고객으로 가지고 있었다. 이자율 상승의 영향을 받아 

이 기업들이 많은 현금이 필요 했다.  자연히 이들이 많은 돈을 찾아가기 시작 

했다. 은행은 인출에 필요한 돈이 모자랐다. 은행은 이자율이 낮을 때 삿던 

본드를 팔아야 했다. 시장에 나와 있는 본드는 지금 막 나온 본드와 옛날에 

발행된 본드 두가지가 있다.  막나온 본드는 높은 이자를 주고 옛날에 나온

본드는 낮은 이자를 준다. 자연히 새로 발행 한 본드를 고객들은 선호 한다.

말하자면 새로 발행된 본드의 수요가 옛날에 발행 된 본드보다 많아 진다.

따라서 옛날에 발행된 본드는 싸게 팔린다. SVB는 산 가격보다 싸게 본드를

팔아야 했다.
