우연히 들어왔다가   " Edward Said 의  orientalism 이 동양을  static, undeveloped, inferior라고 규정 헀다"는 
comment 에 동의 할수 없다는 것이 전문가는 아니지만  저의 생각입니다.

 이 Palestine 출신의 철학자 겸 ,영문학자는  대부분의 서양 media(많은 중동인은 Terrorist), 음악( for example...)
나비부인 , Miss Saigon).문학등..에서   동양, 중동 문화 가  inferior 한것으로 묘사된것에  반대라고 할까  
서양 제국주의 식민주의에 근거한  서양사람들의  편견의 결과라고  생각한 사람으로 알고 있읍니다.

이러한 노력의 결과 친구  Jewish musician  Daniel Barenboim 과 같이  Israrael 음악인들과  Palestine
또 다른 중동의 음악가들을 모아 West-Eastern Divan Orchestra를 창립, 활동하지 않았나 하는 것이 제 개인적 생각입니다.
저도  Said 의 글을 다시 자세히 읽어 보겠읍니다.

After having read Edward Said's articles, I am sort of confused as well.

Since the publication of Edward Said's Orientalism in 1978, however, much academic discourse has used the term
"Orientalism" in reference to a patronizing Western attitude towards Middle Eastern, Asian and North African societies.
In Said's analysis, the West essentializes these societies as static and undeveloped—thereby fabricating a view of Oriental culture
that can be studied, depicted, and reproduced. Implicit in this fabrication, writes Said, is the idea
that Western society is developed, rational, flexible, and superior. (Quote from Wikipeda)

Two statement by Dr. On.

1. "1978년에 Edward Said라는 학자는 oriental(동양)을 static, undeveloped, inferior로 규정하는 데..."
No, Said didn't say that.
It was the western atttude, not Said's attitude. On this, I agree with Dr. JH Choh.

2. "싸이가 서양인들의 동양인을 얕 잡아 보는 풍조를 없에는 데 일조를 한 샘이지요...."
Yes, I agree. This is what "Psy of Korea" did, and also "Said of Palestine" did the same thing.

Here, I am going to add my own personal opinion (or interpretation) about these confusions.
I have read other articles about Edward Said to reach this conclusions.

1. "Edward Said" said that westerners tend to consider orientals as "static and undeveloped"
while they (the westerners, not Said) consider themselves as "developed, rational, flexible, and superior."
2. Remember that Said did not say such things, but it was the Europeans who said such things.
3. Initially, the "orientalism" referred to the mideast area, not the rest of Asia.
4. But, later, the concept was expanded to cover southern Asia, India, eastern Asia, and even northern Africa.
In the original definition of "orientals", it meant mideast Asia only, not the whole Asia.
I am not sure it ever covered "Far eastern Asia". I don't think it did.
5. "Edward Said", as a Palestinian, is the person who "criticized" European for being derogatory to the orientals.
6. "Said" hated the Arab rulers but never was derogatory to his people or his ancestral homeland.
(Just like we hate Korean politicians but never hate our homeland.)

I hope I got it understood correctly but I am not absolutely sure about it.
