     Use privilege to create more just society

 

        White Boy Privilege

 

         Dear women, I am sorry.

         Dear black people, I am sorry.

         Dear Asian-American, dear native Americans, dear immigrants who come here

         seeking a better life, I'm sorry.

         Dear everyone who is'nt a middle or upper class white boy.

         I have started life in the top of the ladder while you were born on the first rung.

         I say now that I would change places with you in an instant, but if given the opprtunity,

         would I?

         Probably not.

         Because to be honest that if ....... love being privileged and I'm not ready to give that away.

         I love it because I can say if .....' and not one of you is attributing that to the fact that everyone

         with my skin color has a dirty mouth.

         I love it because I don't have to spend an hour every morning putting on makeup to meet

         other people's standards.

         I love it because I worry about what kind of food is on my plate instead of weather or not

         there will be food on my plate.

         To be honest I'm scared of what it would be like if I wasn't on the top of the rung if the tables

         were turned and I didn't have my white boy privilege safety blanket to protect me.

         If i lived a life lit by what I lack, not what I have, If I lived a life in which I failed, the world

         would say, 'Told you so.'

         I lived the life that you live.

         When I was born I had a success story already written for me.

         You...you were given a pen and no paper.

         I've always felt that that's unfair but I've never dared to speak up because I've been too scared.

         Well now I realize that there's enough blankie to be shared. Everyone should have the privilages I have.

         In fact they should be rights instead.

         Everyone's story should be written, so all they have to do is get it read.

         Enough said.

         No, not enough said.

         It is embarrassing that we still live in the world in which we judge another peson's character by the size

         of the paycheck, the color of their skin, or the type of chromosomes they have.

         It is embarrassing that we tell our kids that it is not their personality, but instead those same chromosome

         that get to dictate what color clothes they wear and how short they must cut ther hair.

         But most of all, it is embarrassing that we deny this. That we claim to live in an equal country

         and an equal world.

         We say that women can vote. Well guess what: They can run a country, own a company, and throw

         a nasty curve ball as well. We just don't give them the chnace to.

         I know it was'nt us 8th grade white boys who created this system, but we profit from it everyday.

         We didn't notice this privileges though, because they don't come in the form of things we

         gain, but rather the lack of injustices that we endure.

         Because of gender, I can watch any sports on TV, and feel like that could be me one day.

         Because of my race Ican eat at a fancy restraunt without wait staff expecting me to steal the

         silverware.

         Thanks to my parents' salary I go to a school that brings my dreams closer instead of pushing

         them away.

         Dear white boys: I'm not sorry.

         I don't care if you think the feminists are taking over the world, that the Black Lives Matter

         movement has gotten a little too strong, because that's bulls....

         I get that change can be scary, but equality shouldn't be.

         Hey white boys: It's time to act like a woman. To be strong and make a difference. It's time to

         let go of that fear.

         It's time to take that ladder and turn into a bridge.

        "우리 며누리는 미국 애 야." 라고 재미 교포 들이 말 할 때는 "백인"을 의미 한다.

        우리들이 "미국 사람" 하면 의래 백인으로 인식 한다. 그러나 미국 사람중에

        백인은 61% 에 불과 하다. 나머지는 흑인, 히스패닉, 아시안 그리고 인디안 등

        여러 인종이 섞여 사는 곳이 미국이다.

 

         Royce Mann 처럼 도시의 백인 중류 이상의 가정에서 태어난 백인은 좋은 학교

         에서 공부 하고 대학 교육을 받아 훌륭한 직장을 얻기가 다른 인종 보다 쉽고

         거의 신분이 보장 된다. 따라서 이들은 자기들이 Mann 처럼 특권층이라고

         생각할수도 있다.

         그러나 rust belt 의 백인 들은 오히려 자기들이 불이익을 당하고 있다고 생각하고

         있다. 중부의 자동차 공장, 제철 공장 등에서 일했던 베이비 붐어 들은 교외의

         좋은 집에서 별어려움 없이 살았다. 대학 교육은 별로 필요 없는 것이었다.

         그러는 동안에 외 제차, 철강수입 등으로 자기들이평생 다니던 공장이 문을 닫고

         많은 공장 들이 중국, 멕시코 등의 저임금을 찿아서 옮겨 갔다. 배이비 붐어 들의

         자손들은 자기 부모  처럼 고등학교를 졸업 하고 직장을 찿으나, 탐탁스러운

         직장이 없다. 결과 적으로 그들의 생각은 외국과의 불공정 한 무역과 외국, 특히

         중국의 저 임금이 자기들의 직장을 빼았아 갖다고 생각한다.

         그러나 지난 10-15 년동안 하이 테크를 이용한 생산 성의 증가와 중국의 임금 상승

         으로 미국 내의 제조 업이 경쟁력이 생겨서 많은 공장들이 국내로 들어 왔다.

         그러나 옛날에 수 백명이 필요 하던 공장이 요지음엔 수 십명이 면 족 하게 되었다.

         그리고 일꾼 들에게 요구 하는 기술의 정도도 높아 졌다.

         일본, 한국, 독일 등의 자동차 회사들이 미국 내에 많은 조립 공장을 운영 하고 있다.

         이 또한 배이비 붐어 자손들에게 기회 였을 것이다.

         아무 특별한 직업 교육 없이 그저 고등학교 졸업 학력으로 자기 부모가 가졌던

         직장을 얻을 수 없는 처지인 이들은 트럼프의 감언 이설에 속아 그의 지지 세력이

         된 것이다.

         고도의 기술을 요 하는 높은 보수를 주는 직장이 외국인에게 주어 지는 것을 보고

         이민자들이 자기 내 직장을 빼았아 간다고 생각 한다.

 

         흑인에 비하면 백인은 양반이다.

        "People with a black sounding name have to send 50% more job applications than people

        with white sounding names just to get a call back."

        " a black man is three times more likely to be searched at a traffic stop and six times more likely

         to go to jail than a white man."

        " black people serve up to 20% more time in prison than white people for the same crime."

 

        이렇게 잘 대우 받는 백인들은 많은 사람들이 "cowboy"식의 문화에 젖어 있다.

        학교에서 공부 잘해서 일류 대학에 가는 사람들을 "nerd"라고 놀리고 무시한다.

        그리고 자기 내들이 공부 않하는 것을 당연 시 한다.

 

        Royce Mann 과 같은 사람들이 이들을 일 깨워 주어야 할 것 같다. 현재와 미래는

        좋든 싫든 간에 "nerd"의 세상이다. 아는 것이 힘이라고 했다. 이 젠 공부 않하면

        직장이 없다.
