Epicurus and Happiness
Axial Age(pivotal
권리"를 가지고 있다고 주장한 John Locke, 그리고"all men are created equel",
"life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"를 미국 독립 선언문에 기록한 American
에피큐루스는 진정한 인생의 즐거움(true life of pleasure)은
"imperturbable(self-possessed) emotional calm"라고 가르친다.

To be frank, the name of Epicurus was new to me. I knew the word of "Epicurian" but not "Epicurus".
Comparing him to "노자"의 philosophy was even more overwhelming.
So, when you feel like you got hopelessly ignorant and lost, what do you do?
Feeling shamsful, I searched the Internet and got some idea about him. Here's a composite of nice summaries...
Epicurus (341–270 B.C.) founded one of the major philosophies of ancient Greece, helping to lay the intellectual foundations for modern science and for secular individualism. Many aspects of his thought are still highly relevant some twenty-three centuries after they were first taught in his school in Athens, called “the Garden.”
Epicurus's philosophy combines a physics based on an atomistic materialism with a rational hedonistic ethics that emphasizes moderation of desires and cultivation of friendships.
His world-view is an optimistic one that stresses that philosophy can liberate one from fears of death and the supernatural, and can teach us how to find happiness in almost any situation.
His practical insights into human psychology, as well as his science-friendly world-view, gives Epicureanism great contemporary signficance as well as a venerable role in the intellectual development of Western Civilization.
For Epicurus, the purpose of philosophy was to attain the happy, tranquil life, characterized by ataraxia—peace and freedom from fear—and aponia—the absence of pain—and by living a self-sufficient life surrounded by friends.
In the above paragraph, you see that his philosophy is (was) exactly like those of old Chinese poets, such as 도연명.
There are a plenty of their poems in our website uploaded by Dr. K.H. Chung.
As you see, it is not only just "노자" but also a bunch of Korean poets as well, like "김삿갓.
The only difference was that the Chinese and our poets were lacking the knowledge of physics of atomic particles.
Of course, as a happily retired person, I do agree with him too.
Epicurus taught that . . . .
Pleasure and pain are measures of what is good and evil;
Death is the end of both body and soul and should therefore not be feared;
The gods neither reward nor punish humans;
The universe is infinite and eternal;
And events in the world are ultimately based on the motions and interactions of atoms moving in empty space.

I appreciate your excellent supplementation. I often meet people that misunderstand Epicurus
as "pleasure seeking philosopher (hedonist)."
To the contrary, he actually advocate "modest prudent life style."
Pleasure(즐거움)이 인생의 전부이다.
(Prudence)
"showing carefulness and foresight avoiding rashness"
Unfortunately, my most frequent encounter is my wife!(ㅎ,ㅎ,ㅎ)

Philosophy of Science
