Coronavirus A deadly virus spreading through China has killed six and sickened almost 300, kicking off nationwide containment efforts and stoking anxieties in the medical community. This strain of coronavirus was first noticed in China in December, but initially, scientists didn't think it could be passed between humans. Now, they know it can. Chinese officials have canceled Lunar New Year celebrations, and tour agencies are banned from taking groups out of Wuhan, the central Chinese city where the virus was first detected. More thermal monitors and screening areas will be added in public spaces. The Wuhan coronavirus, like other viruses of its type, doesn't respond to vaccination and can lead to pneumonia. It's related to SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), which killed 774 and sickened 8,000 across Asia in 2002 and 2003. |

I didn't realize there could be a link between the climate change and the future flu pandemic until
this writer pointed out how there could be.

Danger!
In this city of 10million + and more than 30,000 Chinese comng in every day,
I remain anxious, scared for public health reasons, especially during next couple of weeks
of Lunar New Year season.
I don't know why Korean Government not stop incoming Chinese tourist, at least temporarily.

It appears all the experts and authorities making the decisions underestimated this virus initially too long.
Now the virus is partly out of control in China, hopefully not in other countries like Korea or Hong Kong.

Learn the lesson by Chinaman? You, kidding!
Chinamen love to die to eat wild animals no matter what, as long as it is good for their 양기- Koreans are not much different I understand- !
Problem is one out of four human (?) beings on the surface of the earth – might be more now since this statistic was from more than two decades ago! - is Chinese, I understand. Didn’t they wipe out Rhinos almost completely from the surface of the earth because they love rhino horn as an aphrodisiac- don’t they take Viagra? -. Now time to wipe out Chinamen themselves? As long as it doesn't spread out to kill the innocent peoples, they deserved to die as the price to eat alive wild animals, as they wish.
Koreans? Not sure, man!
Indeed, I was told many Korean males make a group tour to Thailand regularly to eat alive snakes to boost 양기 and practice with the local prostitutes - I heard directly from one highly educated government officer/lawyer who happened to be one of my high school classmate’s brother in law and was referred to me to SamSung Hospital for a strange tumor growing along the femoral area very next to the femoral vein, which later confirmed as an alive parasite/worm (forgot the name but starting with s---) originated from the snakes by the biopsy-. Of course this stupid guy got it from this unique trip to Vietnam.
I remember while in Korea through the 90s I was furious to learn almost all the medical staffs of SamSung Hospital, young and old, take the herbal stuff- 똥물같은 한약- at least once a year under the title of ‘몸 보한다’ and if not, that would become a shame to the wives! Correct? What is exactly ‘몸 보한다’? Does it mean 양기? What the fuck is it?
I wish someone who knows more to tell me what it is!

Bats are a food source for humans in some areas. Bats are consumed in various amounts in Seychelles, Indonesia, Palau, Guam, and in some other African, Asian, and Pacific Rim countries and cultures.[1][2] In Guam, Mariana fruit bats (Pteropus mariannus) are considered a delicacy,[3][4] and a flying fox bat species was made endangered due to being hunted there.[1] In addition to being hunted as a food source for humans, bats are also hunted for their skins.[1] Hunting techniques include netting and with a shotgun.[1] Bats were also eaten in parts of Europe and Middle East in the past to a lesser extent. Bats are still eaten in parts of Africa, where in one method of capture, a cave is raided and the escaping bats' wings snagged on prickly branches.
The 1999 version of The Oxford Companion to Food states that the flavor of fruit bats is similar to that of chicken, and that they are "clean animals living exclusively on fruit".[1] Bats are prepared in several manners, such as grilled, barbecued, deep fried, cooked in stews and in stir frys.[1] When deep fried, the entire bat may be cooked and consumed.[1] Bats have a low fat content and are high in protein.[1][5]
During cooking, bats may emit strong odors reminiscent of urine and feces. This may be reduced by adding garlic, onion, chili pepper or beer during cooking.[1][5](from Internet)
Thank you, Dr. Lee, for your valuable comment.
By reading all your descriptions on this page, including stories on 짜장면 and 죽,
you certainly seem to be more than qualified as a professional food connoisseur, especially
in regard to Asian foods, etc.
According to some experts, it appears bats may be the original source of Wuhan coronavirus,
which may or may not have been transmitted to snakes before being transmitted to humans.
Your description of people's craziness demanding the wild animal dishes explains clearly
why SARS, MERS and now Wuhan are plaguing humans.
The powerful Xi Jinping looks so powerless against the virus and his people's eating traditions.
He at least banned the trade of wild animals in the food market, which numbers 106 species.
Wuhan coronavirus once again reminds all of us humans of the truth that we humans are only
part of the animal kingdom sharing the germs plaguing us in spite of all the technological advances
we humans have achieved. As long as we humans continue to consume the wild animals
numbering 106 species, it appears we humans will continually be reminded of the truth that
might indeed threaten with the help of the climate change
the existence of humans on Earth as the virologist implied in 1970's.
The experts in the above quoted article are saying that the climate change could very well
release more deadly viruses to the wild animals from the former frozen worlds.

No wonder why China has become the source of the wild animal originated virus such as coronavirus.

Naaaaaaah, Dr. Lee, I am not qualified as a food connoisseur, according to my wife – she teases me I do not have a ‘discriminating’ taste so that I will enjoy even a card box piece if someone serves as a food - there was one story I have to become her laughing stock so that I admit!- .
But I do have a strong curiosity to the food and I always demand to the colleagues whenever they invite me, to make sure they arrange me to taste their best (?) traditional foods as THE condition to accept the invitation – indeed, I once visited to Poland twice a year for two consecutive years in a row because of their fantastic foods, more specifically sausage and/or sauerkraut – based soups in different variety!-.
Anyhow, the basic problem Chinese has their culture as a whole including the food. In early days when I traveled extensively through China with my mentor, Melville Williams, the founder of transplant and vascular surgery at the Hopkins to whom I owe 100% of my surgical technical finesse in particular- he was born in Suzhou, China as a son of the missionary professor of sociology-, I had a chance to visit many deep countryside and learned their concept of the family among ordinary Chinese in peasant level. Amazingly they really couldn’t care much about the attire, what they wear, but they really cared what they eat wherever I visited regardless of their economy status.
Of course, the fish is the dish for the grand finale of Chinese cuisine regardless of regional cuisines and the ‘fresh’, sometimes ‘alive’ fish was the symbol of their cuisine. Indeed, Zhejiang Cuisine is famous with ‘fish’ I learned through the visit to Hangzhou but also Shandong/Beijing Cuisine or Fujian Cuisine or Jiangsu Cuisine are famous for the dishes made of freshly caught fishes, which sound quite natural since those regions have abundant seafoods with much higher income to afford. But I was quite surprised even inland Sichuan and Hunan Cuisine claims ‘fresh alive’ fish as the finale.
So I confirmed Chinese in general are so obsessed to such ‘fresh’ quality of food across the board and naturally they insist to have chicken or duck, for example, freshly killed right before the cooking in front of you as a special treat- they really don't care the refrigerator in terms of freshness point of view!-. And again, they consider any kind of wild animals including the game meat as a special delicacy so that they are willing to pay extra. Indeed, someone cordially asked me whether I am interested in fresh snake meat like many Koreans want to try while I visited to Guangzhou years ago.
I don’t know how many of you had a chance to visit wet/sea food market in China- not Japanese! - but literally they live with all different kinds of animal, big or small, together around clock, 24 hours a day, 7 days week with NO exception. I remember how wet and dirty the wet market in Wuhan, hard to walk through, when I visited in 1995 on way to Shanghai, off the boat after Yangtze River cruise, although they showed same place/market on the video after they cleaned out thoroughly now. Simply, it would be impossible to avoid such cross contamination/ propagation to the human.
So it is a part of their food culture you can’t ban by the law because they are CHINESE after all!
Sadly,
BB Lee

I vividly remember seeing in TV the testimony by a Nobel Prize-winning scientist
at congress hearing in the 1970's who was asked by the congressmen the question,
"What is the number one threat to the existence of mankind, nuclear bombs or something else?"
He answered unequivocally, "It is virus, not nuclear bombs."
I get reminded of his answer whenever the world is concerned about the possible
worldwide pandemic
by the new unknown virus, like SARS, MERS and now Wuhan.
I once read a thick book documenting every detail involving the 1918 Flu Pandemic.
The scientific community was in complete darkness in spite of maximum coordinated efforts
by the European countries and USA with German microbiologists leading the way.
The German scientists' final conclusion was that they discovered a new bacteria from the autopsies
of the patients who died of flu and named it Hemophilus Influenzae. They were convinced that
this bacteria caused the pandemic, which in retrospect is ridiculous.
The worldwide panic was palpable by the urgency of every country and every scientist to find out
what's going on. It was complete chaos in the dark for a period of years.
Any scientist who knows what happened in that pandemic certainly will not underestimate
the graveness of that kind of pandemic threatening mankind.
By the way, if the same question is given to the scientist now, I wonder whether the answer
may be different, i.e. possibly the climate change rather than the virus which certainly remains
as a constant threat, so does the nuclear bombs.
