The Story of Mignon 2

Mignons Gesang

"Was hat man dir, du armes Kind getan?"
Kennst du es wohl?
Dahin! Dahin

Dahin! Dahin
Geht unser Weg; O Vater, lass uns ziehn!

Mignon Song

Dost know the land where citrons, lemons, grow,
Gold oranges 'neath dusky foliage glow,
From azure sky are blowing breezes soft,
Does know that land?
The myrtles still, the laurel stands aloft?
'Tis there! 'tis there!
I would with thee, O my beloved one, go!

Dost know the house, its roofs do columns bear,
The hall with splendor bright, the chambers glare?
Therein stand marble forms, and look at me:
b What is't, poor child, that they have done to thee?
Dost know that house?
'Tis there! 'tis there!
I would with thee, O my protector, go!

Dost know the mount, whose path with clouds is fraught,
Where by the mule through mist the way is sought,
Where dwell in caves the dragon's ancient brood,
Where falls the rock, and over it the flood,—
Dost know that mount?
'Tis there! 'tis there!
Does lead our road. O father, let us go!

Finally I found Mignon Song!

The next encounter of Mignon happened at the German Language class of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1958 when I was a junior in the Pre-Medical Course. This was a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which started with: “Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen bluehn,, Im dunkeln Laub die Gold-Orangen gluehn…” After this poem was completely studied, the professor talked about Wilhelm Meister’s Years of Apprenticeship thoroughly, especially about Mignon and the relationship of her and Meister.

Following is the story I had heard from the College professor at that time, the memory of which I have kept as vividly as yesterday.
It was a very sad story of Mignon, who was born out of aging parents, and sent to their relatives for rearing in a distant place, where she had her lonely childhood without same aged children, and learned to play alone, frequently wandering here and there, which was fully described in the poem.
One day while she was playing alone, she was abducted by a kidnap gang, who sold her to an owner of a circus troupe. In the first night she was so frightened and prayed for rescue, and then in her sleep the Virgin Mary appeared and told her not to tell her hometown to anybody, then eventually she will be finally sent to her home. Mignon sincerely promised to the Virgin Mary, and so she never told her hometown to anyone including Wilhelm, who was her rescuer, protector, beloved and even father.
While growing she seemed to be in some conflict with her relationship with Meister, and then suffered ill-defined illness which was gradually progressive. When Meister visited her, she was very weak and could not walk or jump as she used to. At the final moment she collapsed in Meister’s arms and passed away peacefully. Meister was grief-stricken and cried uncontrollably, “This poor angel came to me for help, but after all I didn’t help her enough.”
Afterwards Meister met her real father! And that ends the sad story.
At this time I have to indicate an error from my college professor: The girl born out of the aging parents was not Mignon, but Mignon's mother, Sperata, which you will find in the last Story of Mignon.
The Lied de Mignon, Mignon Song, and 미뇽의 노래 will be presented below.
