Free college tuition for everyone? Rescind all the student loans unconditionally?
Wow! How wonderful! What a utopia! I don’t know much about ‘equality’ as a basic human right altogether as Bernie claims and everyone seems to nod to giving the consent to this idea though!
I might be wrong but is it really fair to everyone? Who is going to pay?
It reminds me of my agony involved in my two daughters’ college tuition soon after I settled at Georgetown Univ in 1978. As an assistant professor, they paid approximately 40,000 USD before the tax as annual salary then, way below the income private practitioner generated. Although the chief, Charlie Hufnagel generously allowed me to choose/add Washington Hospital Center instead of VA Hospital to generate additional income as an option to compensate/make up for such financial shortage, to reaching to 100,000 USD per year as gross income.
But, it was still way short to send two daughters to Boston at the same time. The expense to send my first daughter to Harvard Law- although Georgetown U offered to provide a substantial financial support if she should study at Georgetown Law, she already sacrificed for her college to go to the Johns Hopkins instead of Yale with no tuition, where they provided a full scholarship despite my income level so that I couldn’t ask her further!- and also second daughter to Harvard Undergraduate at the same time was simply too much, which reaches over 70, 000 USD per year altogether after the tax.
With my Korean concept, I simply couldn’t let these girls work like boys to take care of by themselves like other ordinary American kids- my son in law paid his student loan for Harvard Law for 10 years after he graduated! - but felt obliged to provide full expense.
Harvard Institutes never gave actual money to these girls due to my income level but only giving the scholarship by the paper as an honor(?) so that I had to generate 70.000.00 USD per year to pay their tuition, etc.
I was simply overwhelmed with such enormous financial burdening. After much discussion with my senior partner, Charlie Currier, I decided to sacrifice/change my original plan as an academic surgeon and I joined to the private practice for good seven years, on and off, based on Washington Hospital Center to generate the income to provide such expensive college tuition, etc while on interim resignation from Georgetown U before coming back to the Hopkins clans. So I made such tremendous sacrifice(?) for my kids sent through the colleges even with changing my career course but with no qualm whatsoever! After all, this is a capitalistic society!
Then, why do I have to bother for others that is none of my GD business and their business! Free college for everyone with the tax money I paid? Noooooo way! This is a capitalistic society and not a communist society! No such freeloader, no way! Rescind the student loan? What about those guys who made such efforts to pay their loans with such personal sacrifice? Isn't it unfair to them like my son in law? But in a way, when I should look back, I was very lucky to get all the supports from the colleagues to fulfill the aim and I consider it was the best time of my year/life with no pressure to become own boss, I reckon! But once is enough! No more!

Greediness, is it bad or good? Until mid 19th century, almost all the nations in the world were
ruled by the kings. Then, the whole world was transforming to become Democratic countries
where people ruled the nation. By that time two ideas were emerged; one that the greediness
was thought to be bad, the other to be good. The former would not allow people earn the money
, save it and let it grow. If they do, it was a crime. The latter encourages people to accumulate
fortune as much as they want. The greediness was a virtue rather than a crime. The experiment
went for over 70 years. The latter was clearly a winner. The former namely communism was
condemned. A few are left. People's lives in those countries are miserable. Nurturing greediness
causes incentives for people to work hard. That's the only way to make the economy grow.
By the way, Confucianism teaches the activities to make money is immoral. In other words, The greediness
to have more is bad.

Couldn't agree more, Dr. Ohn but as long as the ‘greediness’ gives a justifiable incentive, I have not much qualm but when it is further extended to giving the harms to others, it would be quite natural to resent to 'greediness' as justifiable reaction. Indeed, it is hard to justify the CEO of big corporates is being paid thousands and thousands times more than the average 'hard working' employees/workers as pure dividend for their 'incentive' by all means. But isn’t it unavoidable price to pay for the capitalism? I really don't know but certainly unfair in my opinion like 'The Merchant of Venice'. As long as ‘make money/profit’ would not give a harm to others, it should not be condemned as greediness to have more but should be tolerated for the incentive. It is a human nature after all!

Not many years after East Germany fell down, I had a chance to give a workshop for vascular malformations with Prof. Dirk Loose of Univ Hamburg for a week at Hamburg mostly for the vascular surgeons from East European countries sponsored by E.U.
It was my first experience to stay at the O.R. all day so that I learned some unique problem they had with new (?) OR staffs, originally from East Germany, who were hired by the law and retooled/retrained to accommodate a new ‘work ethics’ in Western society with quite a difficulty due to their old habits of socialism and eventually communism.
Even years after they were supposed to be assimilated to Western society sufficiently, their mentality was still fixed to communism-oriented work ethics, strictly limiting to what they were asked to do, for example, no more no less! Such attitudes generated so many obstacles to run the O.R. I even as a visitor was also perceivable. By the law, they were not allowed to be fired! Hence, no incentive, no desire to work harder to improve their status! And no competition!
Democratic socialism? Is that what the left wing of Democratic party wants under the leadership of ex-communist Bernie who admires Fidel Castro dearly? How could you go along what Bernie advocates? Medicare for all? Free college tuition? Free for everything for everyone so that we all could live happily altogether ever after in same level?
God bless America!
