(The Brothers; John Foster Dulles and Allen Dulles, Their Secret World War)
Stephen Kinzer gave lecture on his book with same name at book signing ceremony
held in Scranton University.
Dulles brothers served Eisenhower administration in1950's. Foster was the Secretary of
State and Allen the head of CIA. Foster was 7 year older than Allen. Allen planned and
carried out many covert operations in Soviet satellite countries, medeast, south America,
and Africa. US got some short trem gratifications, but most of them left long term effects
that are damaging US national interests. Iran and mideast are good example. It is surprising
to find out their decision to get involved in Vietnam, when France and Winston Churchill
gave up because they concluded that they could not defeat Hochiming.
CIA gave money directly or indirectly through American businessmen to influence politicians
in free world countries. It employed journalist as an agent to manipulate public opinion.
Thr author of the book quotes, “the brothers never expected Blowback”.
For 8 years during Eisenhower administration, Allen and Foster Dulles carried out
170 clandestine operations. His actions littered with trouble spots all over the world
even now. Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Congo, Guatemala are some of many. CIA
failed badly and exposed its identity to the world to remove Suharto of Indonesia.
After Allen died in the early years of Kennedy administration, Robert Kennedy restructured
CIA because of failure on Bay of Pig in Cuba. But covert operations continued and there were
163 operations during Kennedy administration.
