Join us as we look back at the year's most memorable milestones. Read about Lexi Thompson’s historic win at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in Story No. 12. Heading into Sunday at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the set up couldn’t have provided for a better spectacle for women’s golf at the season’s first major championship. Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie tied atop the leaderboard. Both looking to earn the jump into Poppie’s Pond and a career watershed moment, that elusive first major. Thompson proved quickly, though, that the moment wasn’t too big for her at 19 years of age, making birdie on the first hole. That birdie would prove prophetic as Thompson went on to fire the low round of the day, a bogey free, 4-under 68, and was able to enjoy the stroll through the “Dinah Shore Walk of Champions,” a walk made my countless greats of the game before her. “It’s a great feeling. This is what I’ve worked so hard for,” Thompson said. “This was one of my goals coming into the year, to win a major. I’ve always seen myself winning a Kraft Nabisco. It’s such a huge honor with all the history behind the tournament. It’s just a dream come true. ” Thompson held off Wie by three shots to become the second youngest major champion in women’s golf history with the win and earned the plunge into Poppie’s Pond and iconic white robe for her win. “It was everything I imagined it would be,” Thompson said. Now, the four-time career winner is imagining more major championship titles. More jumps into Poppie’s Pond. At only 19 years old, there’s no telling how many more that might be.. |
Kraft Navisco Championship has been one of most popular and flamboyant
major tournaments in LPGA. This tournament was started under name of
ever popular Dinah Shore and has made tradition of jumping into Poppie's
pond by winner and her company.
So many dramatic events had been occured on Sunday afternoon such as
Karrie Webb's amazing eagle pitching at 18th hole preventing Michelle Wie's
first Major at tender age of 17(2006),Lincicome's unbelievable 2nd shot at
18th hole to making winning eagle(2009),IK Kim's heart breaking short putt miss
in 2012. This major is only one preventing Seri Pak's elusive 'Carrier Grand Slam'.
Again Michelle Wie had not luck with this tournament. Lexi Thompson outdueled
Michelle in 2013,although this second place made her winning Rolex Annika
Major Award in 2014.
This tournament's name will be changed to 'ANA Inspiration' in 2015. KJ
"Poppie's Pond"
Beginning in 1988, the tournament winner has celebrated her victory by jumping
in the pond surrounding the 18th green. The pond is known as Champions Lake or
"Poppie's Pond" as it was dubbed in 2006 honor of Terry Wilcox, the tournament
director from 1994 through 2008; Wilcox is known as "Poppie" to his grandchildren.
Amy Alcott started the practice but it was not fully embraced until 1994 when
Donna Andrews took the leap and it has since become a yearly tradition.
One of the most memorable jumps was in 1991 after Alcott won for the third time
and made the jump with then tournament host Dinah Shore. In 1998, winner Pat Hurst
jumped in only up to her knees, as she could not swim
