Wow, what a speedy help to ease my curiosity for years, KwanHo.
Through years, I was quite curious about the background of this particular Chinese poem whenever I listen to its 吟詠- my most favorite 詩吟 (Shigin:: reciting the famous poems, Japanese or Chinese, on Japanese classical tune) among quite a few I collected through years: https://youtu.be/NUY5Rr7FaaQ (涼州詞 王翰 吟詠 詩吟 奉観流 矢橋奉城).
Though I didn't know much background, I knew this particular 詩吟 has been so popular among Japanese, even I know/learn enjoy.
I thank you once again to share your expertise with us.

It is really amazing to learn the fact that 'wine' is NOT a western monopoly but the Chinese also produced their own version. Indeed, I read somewhere about Chinese wine but I thought it is a relatively new idea imported from Western culture. So they had a Redwine even in the Tang dynasty era already!

Dear BB: I remember reading the word of "포도" twice in an old Chinese poetry book, which my father had studied during his young boyhood. Somehow I found this worn-out book which showed such great poetry.
My mother said when father was very young, he studied under 한문훈장, but during the worst summer heat, 훈장 stopped the regular course, and took his pupils outside the house, found some shades under big trees, and he started chanting the poems in the very book.
I tried to read them with help from my mother and found the words, "葡萄" and "蒲桃". They were both the same grapes, but the latter was changed to the former in recent dates. These two poems containing these two words were still in the some hundreds year old book in my shelf.
I will list these poems later for you.
Have a good day.

The history of wine:
I searched HISTORY OF WINE and found the following :
Wine has been produced for thousands of years, with evidence of ancient wine production in Georgia (c. 6000 BC) [1][2] China (c. 7000 BC), Armenia (c. 4100 BC), Iran from 5000 BC, and Sicily from 4000 BC. The oldest archaeological evidence of wine
produced from grapes has been found at sites in China (c. 7000 BC),
Georgia (c. 8000 BC), and in Armenia (c. 4100 BC)

It is amazing, KwanHo. I never expected the Chinese have such long history of the grape and the wine of their own. What ignorance!!!
Then, what happened through these many years with this grape wine they cultivated much earlier than any other race? We only talk about distilled liquor/Baijiu these days! Shame no one seems to care about Chinese wine which must be good!
I certainly will try Chinese-made grape wine on the next visit.

I don't know whether there are such things as Chinese wines, but I will consult with my favorite wine store in Rochester, NY, the best wine store here. I know there is Saki, Japanese 정종, which is good when you combine Teriyaki or Sukiyaki.
You have to be a little careful in choosing Japanese restaurants.
The best and authentic Japanese restaurants can be found in California somewhere between Newport Beach and L. A.
The worst (?) and fake Japanese Restaurant was the one named Japanese Restaurant in the prestigious area of MIT, Cambridge, MA. Connor, my grandson, is an MIT graduate, whom I visited a lot more than I visited Jim, my younger son, who graduated from Harvard a long time ago. When we visited Connor, he several times took us to that local Japanese Restaurant, where girls were dressed in Kimonos, but don't speak Japanese, or don't even know Teriyaki or Sukiyaki. But Connor and his friend were enjoying these fake Japanese foods. So I wisely didn't discourage them by telling my discovery.

Regretfully, most of Japanese restaurants started by Japanese in this area are all taken over by Koreans so that you shouldn't expect genuine Japanese sushi in particular in these days wherever you go here in the U.S. unless you choose a few well-known very expensive restaurants.
Anyhow, we learned Korean chefs here in the U.S. seem to make nigiri sushi in Korean version, not only the size of rice versus to fish but also the way mix the rice with vinegar.
Indeed, I am always amazed to see my wife to figure it out after she makes a few bites of the nigiri sushi made by non-Japanese chef.
Apparently, proper rice preparation for nigiri sushi is the crux, either Kanto or Kansai style, to be accepted as the best sushi. I haven't heard much about the sashimi/fish part of the nigiri sushi so far, however.
Luckily we have one small Japanese restaurant nearby to Georgetown University run/succeeded by the son of original founder/chef though the base price for person used to be 100 USD already more than a decade ago so that I used to take my wife for her birthday or special occasions since I wasn't able to enjoy the sushi as much as I pay.
Anyhow, it has been many years since my last visit to such expensive Japanese restaurants but it seems to be worthy to pay enormous amount if you are real connoisseur of Japanese sushi, not me.
