Thank you, Dr. Ohn, for enlightening me on the origin of 부대찌개.
didn't know there was such a painful story behind it.

Today the ranking website Ranker closed their poll on America’s favorite comfort food. With an impressive 34K votes tallied, the top 50 results must carry some weight, right?
The top ten comfort foods were as follows:
1. Grilled Cheese Sandwich
2. Chocolate
3. Pizza
4. Ice Cream
5. French Fries
6. Macaroni and Cheese
7. Chocolate Chip Cookies
8. Mashed Potatoes
9. Fried Chicken
10. Spaghetti & Meatballs
The top 10 is hardly surprising, but Ranker’s top 50 includes some puzzling results. For example, mozzarella sticks come in at just #24, despite basically being cylindrical, snackable grilled cheeses themselves. Tomato soup is ranked a lowly #48, demonstrating a total inability to ride grilled cheese’s coattails, despite the deliciousness of their pairing. And perhaps most disturbing of all, tacos don’t even make the list. Sacrilege! (from the Internet)

No, no, no, Kwanho, it is not dirty but fully edible or rather savior for starving peoples through the War! Indeed, this 꿀꿀이죽 is our proud (?) symbol of the survival I infrequently quote to the colleagues throughout the world for these many years! I only regret and rather upset that Koreans intend to forget or deny such a painful past, which should remain as their guide!
Anyhow, 부대찌개 was a too well-known fact in those days and all the GI/American soldiers knew it. But some nasty GI guys intentionally stuck the cigarette butts to the leftover foods, especially over the breakfast eggs, to make sure no one can eat- apparently this tobacco ruins the taste of collected foods in the whole bucket!- so that there was even a fistfight to stop such nasty behavior, one reporter wrote on their paper 'Stars and Stripes' together with the photo showing small sign posted over the dining table at the Eight Army compound at YongSan, asking " please do NOT drop the cigarette butts on the leftover foods".
So those are the days of hunger no one in Korea these days wish to hear!

As a matter of fact, I feel I should claim my limited contribution to the menu at the main restaurant located at the basement of Samsung Medical Center in Seoul I persuaded the manager to add this 부대찌개 on the menu. Indeed, one of three popular/traditional soups/stews in Poland which made me an instant hero(?) to have eaten all evening, unintentionally nothing but the three different soups, is almost identical with our 부대찌개 (or 꿀꿀이 죽) with many tasty mini sausage/Kielbasa. As a matter of fact, I happened to be a typical Korean male who cannot survive with the (noodle) soup like Vietnamese Pho, collected quite a few memoirs based on the native soups all around the world as a self-claimed connoisseur through years, and I once again confirmed such similarity between one of the Polish soups- there are very well known seven different Polska soups together with two different Hungarian soups in addition to one Ukrainian soup!- which gives basically an identical deep taste of 경상도 김치(밥)국 by Polish sauerkraut they added as the main ingredient. So I gave such enthusiastic support to the manager to add 부대찌개 on the menu with the advice to add the illustration as 'Korean version of Polish soup'. It was indeed a great hit every foreign visitor of mine except one from Denver, CO, crazy Mexican American, Wayne Yakes, missing a 'kick' like 매운김치찌개.
So no one should have a reservation on this superb 부대찌개 as an advanced - in terms of taste buds point of view- Korean soup/stew, I highly recommend!

P.S. BTW, the manager of 한식부 of Samsung Medical Center restaurant came by to ask my opinion on this 부대찌개 because I was known to bring many foreign visitors and also gave a smashing success of 양식부 which manager took my advice to add 'Al Dente' to boil the pasta/noodle just right condition as a special option, which brought many clients, including my high school buddy 정근모, coming only to eat the spaghetti/linguini (fini) in a real 'Al Dente' no other Italian restaurant in town serve right.

Dear BB: I am not an expert on 꿀꿀이 or 부대찌게, so I will leave it at this point.
It doesn't mean I surrender unconditionally, but keep it at this point as of now.
Thanks for your friendly advice anyway.

It must be very tasty food because it is popular among others as well as Koreans.
But I never had it because I knew why it is called "부대 찌개."
If I see something like "Spam 김치찌개" or "소제지 전골"or 베이컨 김치찌개" in the menu,
I woul feel better and try it.

As said, Dr. Ohn, if anyone should like Koreanische '얼큰한 맛', "부대 찌개" is certainly worthy I would not hesitate to recommend without reservation. My wife blames(?) on my 'cheap taste' but what can I say, I was born with cheap(?) taste and regretfully many have a wrong prejudice purely based on a misunderstanding by the name. Bless the 부대 찌개!!!!

P.S. '꿀꿀이 죽' reminds me of my rotation to 제주도립병원 to finish my SNU residency in 1967 where I saw the pig pen so closely for the first time as a typical Seoulian. On way to the hospital, I had to walk through a short cut next to a relatively large pig pen that held a few pigs. Literally the owner dumped all the leftover foods and vegetables to these 꿀꿀이 to eat and it was such fun to watch their munching which looked so tasty. Once in awhile, one of them stopped chewing ane come near to me and stare at me like trying to tell me ' it is very tasty, do you want a some?' Their eyes with long eyelashes made them look so innocent, blinking once in a while and they genuinely seemed to enjoy their own 꿀꿀이 죽.
It is quite a story by BBC describing a S. Korean comfort food,
budae-jjigae 부대찌개, starting from 1953 right after the Korean War
till now when the dish went international and global.
I've never tasted it although President Lyndon Johnson is said to have.
It seems that Korea appears to be a constant presence on world stage nowadays
in all walks of life.
South Korea, it seems, can easily win a popularity contest among all nations.
In contrast, unfortunately, North Korea, without a doubt, can easily win the contest
for the most unpopular, the most disliked or hated country thanks to their repressive oligarchy,
which, here we go again, got mad with S. Korea and disconnected direct hot lines
with threatening remarks by somebody's sister.
What a shame!
