At the retirement reception of Dr. Jae-Chan Chang

The classmates of the 1965 class of SNUMC were invited by the UC-Irvine Medical Center to the retirement reception of Dr. Jae-Chan "Jay" Chang. Except a few who couldn't attend, five of us were there to celebrate his retirement.

Most of us who practiced as private medical practitioners in the grass-root communities, rather than in teaching institutions, have not had such an occasion when we retired. We had a rare chance to peek into the inner life of medical training facility in a university campus. Most of us had been a part of those environments when we were under training very long time ago. It was a special occasion, a sort of back to home experience, and our website, as far as I remember, has never had an web page to show such a story. So, here's my notes together with pictures taken by two of my classmates. The pictures explain it very well.

To watch Jae-Chan to retire in front of our eyes was an emotional thing for a moment. At one time, just like yesterday, hadn't we been a bunch of young boys, back in Korea? However, his gray hairs with a grandfatherly appearance reminded me that we are, now, as much older persons as he is. I was grateful that, after such a long passage of time, we happened to be in the same room under the sky of California to witness Jay's retirement. I almost had tears in my eyes. Being able to be a part and a witness at my friend's retirement reception is a blessing for both of us in many ways.

It made me look back my own career in America, my adopted home away from home. I can't possibly mention all the details of how I ran it through, but it had been a long way, carried with life's roller coasters of hardship, sadness, and despair as well as joy, hope, and happiness. In the end, it was something so much worthwhile and precious that I don't want to trade with anything else. I am sure that we all have the same sentiment on our past.
I am sure Jay feels the same. No matter how bitter or sweet, life is a beautiful and wonderful thing, especially when it was all faithfully done and saved in a giant memory file into one's personal archives.

Our sincere congratulations to Jae-Chan for his job well-done, having fulfilled the promise at the graduation, and having come to a wonderful finish line of a medical career. Now, all he has to do is starting a new life and enjoy peace and happiness. On behalf of the class of 1965, we all wished that his dream would be realized, and we would be sharing it together with him.

Congratulations Jay !!
