Perry Hotel

.....Hahn Joong Lee

Midnight, Petoskey, Michigan.
Looking out into the darkness over the quiet Lake Michigan,
the streetlights of the Gaslight District barely penetrating the thick fog
after the late evening showers in early summer of Northern Michigan.

Sue, my sweetheart, my true love, and I are celebrating our 33rd anniversary.
It is thirty three years ago, also, when Sue and I arrived here in Michigan.
Petoskey is known for Petoskey Stones, which are some 350 million years old coral fossils.
Lake Michigan was once a sea, an ocean, with lots of corals living underneath.

Thirty three years versus three hundred fifty million years, yet
they are brief moments in the life of this universe.
Sue and I and those Petoskey Stones are mere transients in this universe.

Thirty three years seem a long time when we look at our three grown up children
and our first grand daughter, Isabelle, eight months old, the most beautiful angel we ever saw.
Three hundred fifty million years seem a long time beyond my imagination, yet
I'm forced to believe by science that it is only a brief pause
in the life of this awesome universe full of wonders and miracles.

Perry Hotel is one hundred years old sitting on the hill overlooking the lake.
Room 216 has a balcony with a table, chairs and a couch providing
the spectacular sunset every evening, a daily big event in this town.
I imagine this room 216 must have pleased many guests in all those years.
I promise myself Sue and I will revisit this room next year.

While Sue was leaning on my chest cozily looking out to the Lake Michigan,
she murmurs, " Everything seems to come only to pass away."
Spontaneously, like a reflex, I say, "Except one thing."
She nods without saying a word.
She knew exactly what I meant, "Our Love."

* Of note, this was written in June of 1999. We now have three grand daughters,
ages, 6 1/2, 3 1/2, and 2.....April. 26. 2005

물안개씨,
A beautiful job as usual. 석주와 지금 같이 보고 일하러 가기전에 고맙다는 말 올립니다.
우리둘은 눈물이 글썽했답니다.
음악은 저희들의 favorite 의 하나입니다. Kevin Kern 의 아버지는 이곳에 살고있고,
잘아는 사이로서 한달후쯤 다른 친구들이랑 북미시간으로 골프치러 갈 예정이기도 하구요.
좋은밤 되시길 바라며.

Kevin Kern의 아버지와 잘 아시는 사이라니 저 또한 영광이네요.
한국의 한 여인이 Kevin Kern의 음악을 너무도 좋아한다는 말씀 전해주세요.

물안개씨,
No. 9, 오라버니가 내어주신 Longfellow 시 꼬리글에 제가 Kevin Kern 에 대해서 부언을 했지요.
Kevin 은 중학교때 완전히 장님이 되어버렸지요. 이곳에 아버지는 retired oral surgeon 으로
저와는 30 여년간 아는사이, 일년의 한번은 다른 의사들과 함께 북미시간으로 golfing trip을 간지가
20여년이 되지요.
물안개씨가 Kevin의 음악좋아하신다고 Kevin 아버지 Bill 한데 말씀 하겠읍니다. 항상 고맙습니다.
