The statement :" SNUH and Severance Hospital are two children of the Royal Hospital 제중원"
seems the most accurate statement of the history, which I agree.
It appears that there are some people with extreme views, on each side, more on the Severance side.

"With this auspicious turn of events Allen was able to establish Gwanghyewon (廣惠院, House of Extended Grace) under royal finance and support in Seoul.
Gwanghyewon was the first modern medical facility in Korea.
The Gwanghyewon was soon renamed by Gojong to Che Chung Won (the House of Civilized Virtue) and evolved to become the current Severance Hospital and Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea.[1]
He was instrumental in lifting the nation's anti-Christianity policy to allow the influx of missionaries to evangelize, build schools and other western hospitals in the Hermit Kingdom."
This is the quote from Wikidepia.

If Yonsei people want to have the 廣惠院 (or 廣惠院) as their 100% parent institution,
please let them have it all as their sole ancestor. Actually, we should beg them to have it all.
We, SNU Medical School, don't need Gojong's creation and don't want to share his institution
with someone else together. I don't see any reason to do that. 모조리 가져가라고 합시다.
As of today, we are just what we are. The past heritage doesn't mean anything,
especially, when it comes from the "shameful" terminal stage of Lee Dynasty.
It will be a shame to claim to be a child of one of the most shameful king and era in Korean history.
Rather than having shameful parents, just say we are an orphan from unknown parents.
Despite of that, we know we are what we are today !!
Tell them that we did not inherite the bad genes of the stupid hermit kingdom.

It is apparent that Severence has strong American missionary influence and SNU was established by
Japanese imperial government. It is also true that Koreans often try not to admit Japanese influence
for their favor because of anti-Japanese sentiment. However, I am disappointed to find out that
Wikidepia wrote " ...evolved to become Severence hospital and Yense university...".
I am afraid that it is because of negligence of Medical History department in SNU MC.
I urge them to correct it as "debatable". After all history is winner's claim whether it is true or not.

Although I might be biased, publications from SNU Dep't of Medical History(황상익 교수) includes
much more extensive researches and facts-based statements than Professor 박형우 from Severance side.
Reading through written materials from both sides, I could see some obvious facts/historic elements intentionally
left covered and some exaggerated, in order to make their point of view more credible to the readers.
I guess We have to be careful in reading histories of any kind.
It is obvious Severance is spending much more money to advertise their views on this
such as all hospital buses carry bill board stating 제중원 is "the origin of their hospital"
and the newly constructed llife size 제중원 building in the Yonsei campus.
Strictly speaking, when the Korean Government refused to sell the original 제중원 building
to US missionaries and made them build the Severance Memorial Hospital at the new location(남대문 밖)
and build the new 대한제국 광제원/의학교 under 내아문(내무부), neither Severance or SNU
succeeded historic legacy of 제중원.
Old 제중원 site never used as an hospital afterwards.
Or both hospitals succeeded certain aspects of Jejungwon tradition.
As far as Japanese inflenece concerning importing western medicine during those
period, I believe their level of medical science was never inferior to American medicine
due to heavy interchange of knowledge through German/Austrian medical institutions, who might have
been offering more advanced medical care /education than most of US medical insitutions/schools.
Feeling American Missionary medicine was superior to Japanese top institutions might be wrong(Orientalism?) as far as medical care and science concerned.
I read a biography of an American Surgeon Leo Eloesser(Professor of Stanford, trained under Mikulicz and Cerni) who travelled Japan in early 1930's, Actually stopped briefly at Korea. When he was giving lectures in German using translators to medical students of Tokyo university and Kyoto, the Japanese professor stopped him. saying no need for translators because all the medial students understand German well.
I believe this tells how Japanese institutions were up to date with German medical system/knowlege back then.
In general,I agree with 운영자 선배님 that we should not spend excessive money and energy on this kind of project.
But we do need to approach scientifically(social scientifically) and make sure to leave accurate recording of historic facts on reputable academic media through researches on any historic matters.(I woould not bother Wikipedia so much)

We've been aware of this controversy for sometime.
The documentary Dr. Ohn put on on this page regarding Underwood, founder of Yonsei University,
briefly touched upon Dr. Allen's original idea of the royal hospital to the king, and their vital contribution
to our primitive western medicine in Korea then.
As far as my view of the controversy is concerned, our SNU Hospital and Severance Hospital are two children
of the royal hospital, 제중원, which are obvious facts.
So instead of trying to claim the parent 100%, it would be more productive and constructive for Korean Medicine
if both parties try to find a common ground in their roots, I believe.
