This is the couple I've been taking care of
over thirty years.
I deal with them and their problems sometimes on daily basis.

I wrote this little story this afternoon of a gorgeous, sunny Saturday
of Michigan autumn, after having a nice talk with Mildred and
her daughter who is my age, 70.
All I can say is that you gotta have a good wife.
If you do, you gotta be as nice as you can be to her
while you can and have your brain still left.

Doc, I am not sure if this is a blessing for her, for him, or for both.
What kind of cruel punishment is this for Mildred?

I wish none of us, me and my wife, has to do this kind of thing in the later years.
I wonder if medical science is doing any good just by keeping someone alive.

We, the humanity, has to "realistically" deal with this kind of thing soon or later
despite of all humane moralities and traditional social habits.

Being a doctor, I couldn't dare to say the word of "Euthanasia".

It is known in medical community that approximately 50% of Americans
will eventually develop dementia or Alzheimer's disease in broad sense as they
live longer into 70's, 80's, 90's and over 100.

This means one of two will experience this before the eventuality.
As I read the above comments, I have realized that every individual and
every family react differently to this challenging problem afflicting so many families.

It is very plain to see that my senior or elderly patients have two phobias,
one being cancer phobia, the other being Alzheimer phobia.
Their adult children also are often suspicious of their elderly parents'
mental competence and often over-react to their simple memory lapse.
I often have to reassure their children their parents do not have the disease.

In spite of all of these and all the Alzheimer-related issues, I personally feel that
life is so precious that we as creatures cannot pass any fundamental judgement
to other human beings and can only pray as honestly as we can for guidance
in individual case and that each family deals with it as best as they can with
lots of prayers and counselling readily available.

이글은 며칠前 本人이 제고등학교 Website  에 올린글입니다. Art Buchwald ( Pulitzer-Award-Winng Syndicated  Columnist) 라고 알만한사람들은아는 유명한 Columnist 가있었는데,  Buchwald 씨가  2,3 년前 본인이 수개월안에 세상을 작별할걸알고  Self-Written Obituary 를 써서 (Per requests of many beloved freinds) , 바로 죽기몇일전 자기가 寄稿하든 신문사에보내 죽은직후에 Publish 했던 유명한 이야기입니다.  

이얘기는 요 얼마전에 세상을  황장엽씨의 얘기를 보고 생각이나서 쓴글입니다. 좀 길지만 댓글 에 Relevant 한 얘기가 되는듯 해서 올립니다.

 異風진 世上 을  살아간 사람들 -떠나는사랍들과 남는사람들얘기 ---   M.S. KUK

은퇴 이후,  아침에  일어나서 하는 日常 은  은퇴前 과  많히 다르다.  우선  아침신문 을  집어 오고 커피를 내리고  아침상을 對하는건 은퇴前 이나  은퇴後 가 같으나,  아침을  끊내고 부터는  다르다. 

우리집에  배달 되는  아침일간지 는  미국 남서부 에 있는 100 萬 인구 도시 의  통상적인  신문이라,   첫째 Page  를 보고 스포츠 와  世界 News 欄,  그리고  경제나  다른 Major  신문, 例를 들면 NY times  같은  신문 들과 연계 해서 내는 Syndicated Columnist  들 의 기고를 보고 끝낸다.   이런 Local 신문에는    미국이 아직도  어쩌지 못해 하고있는 Afkanistan  전쟁,  Iran 아니면 중동 문제는 자주 보도되나,  한국 에서 일러나는 일은  어쩌다 한번씩 난다. 

가령  이번주말 에 보도됬던, 십수년전  탈북 을 해서 서울서  살아오던 ‘황장엽’ 씨가  어느하루 아침에,  갑자기 ‘ 別世’   했다든지 – 자살인지 자연死 인지 를 확인해야되서 部檢 을 한다든지 , 또는  “희망의 예기” 를放送 으로 傳播 하고 살아왔던, 조금은  알려져있던‘ 최 윤희’ 씨 같은 사람이, 本人 은 Lupus  같은 희귀 병으로 인해서   힘들게살아오다, 더이상 身體苦痛 을 甘耐 할수 없어, 어느날 저녁 부부 가 같히 스스로  生 을마감 했다는  소식은  한국 신문 을 Internet 을 통해서 보아야 알수있다.

 은퇴前 에는  사무실에 가서, 그날아침에 해야할  급한일들을 어느정도 마무리 해놓은뒤, 그뒤에  公私 e-mail  을 보고, 그날 해두어야 할일 을 정한후, 그뒤에  한국과 미국, News  및  세상 돌아가는 얘기를 보아두는게, 은퇴前  해왔던  아침일과 의 순서였는데, 은퇴후는  집에서 Internet  News 를  본다.  

은퇴前 에는, 하루하루 가 바쁜편이라,  Comment Update Delete
