베토벤의 마지막 교향곡, 제 9 번 (합창) 초연 (1824) 당시,
우뢰 같은 박수 소리를 듣지 못하는 그를 한 여성이 무대에 올라와 
관중으로 향하게 해주어 응답을 하게 했다는 일화를 토대로 하여
재구성한 가상의 내용을 스토리로 하는 영화가 있습니다.

19세기 초 비엔나에 살았던 악성 Ludwig van Beethoven (Ed Harris).
청각을 잃어가며 고독으로 인해 더욱 성격이 광적으로 사나워져 가는
그가 9번 교향곡의 발표를 나흘 앞두고 악보 초고를
연주회 용으로 깔끔하게 카피해 줄 사람을 기다리고 있는 중...

추천을 받고 그에게 찾아 온 사람은
23세의 작곡가 지망의 음악 여생도, Anna Holtz (Diane Kruger).
총명하고 당돌 하기까지한 그녀가 그를 놀라게 합니다.
베토벤이 잘못 그려넣은 음을 간파하고 악보를 바르게 고쳐놓은 것.

괴팍하고 완고한 베토벤이지만 그녀의 매력에 끌립니다.
음악가로서 음을 듣지 못하는 귀머거리 그가 영혼으로 듣는 소리
어느덧 같은 방법으로 음악을 듣고 영혼을 함께 나누게되는 두사람.
9번 합창 교향곡 (환희의 송가)가 만들어 진 배경입니다.

유서를 쓰고 자살까지 생각했던 절망을 자신과의 투쟁에서 이겨내고
인간승리를 통한 환희의 세계를 후세 인류에게 남긴 숭고한 거작.
"백만인이여...고통을 통해 넘어선 자유와 평화를..."이라고
노래합니다.
