Niska Banja

Very sorry about the chorus people. They don't deserve such disasters.
Wasn't that a severe hardship to sing under the candle lights?
However, it might have been a timely blessing for the crazy Republicans.
After all these elections, lawsuits, and Trump businesses,
I don't feel much sympathy for the noisy Texans. I hope God still bless them.
Hadn't Texans wished for secession from the US just a couple of weeks ago?
Instead of seeking Biden's help, why didn't they ask for help from Trump
who is so comfortable and rich under the balmy weather in Florida?
After having received such heart-breaking loyalty and devotion from the Texans,
had Trump even said a word of care or sympathy for the Texans?
The damn SOB wants one-way loyalty but never knows how to return the favor!!
Apologizing for my rant...

I am going to share this unique folk song with my junior colleague, Jovan Markovic of Duke Univ who served as Assistant Editor for one of my books, Dr. Kim because he is from Serbia and still has his family back in Serbia. Because of him, I was intensely interested in Balkan history and learned a lot about Serbia and also have a few Serbian songs in my ethnic music collection/tape but this is the first time to listen to a Serbian folk song sung by the chorus! What a lovely chorus song! Quite ethnic style, isn't it?
Indeed this chorus song reminds me of one unique restaurant, used to be located here in Northern Virginia till lately, Serbian Crown, one and only Russian food restaurant in the vicinity, then when I moved up to Georgetown U, 1978 so that I took many friends to share frozen? Russian vodka. The owner was a quite patriotic Serbian who decorated every room with various Serbian memorabilia, and played Serbian music as a piece of background music all the time so that I am a bit familiar with Serbian music/melodies!
So, I enjoyed this chorus song very much.
warm regards,
BB
P.S. BTW, how could I make a copy of this video to send to Jovan Markovic, Dr. Kim?
He would be delighted to listen.
If not possible, could you send it to me as an attached mail to my email address:
bblee38@comcast.net which accepts up to 14Mb.

Apparently, Eastern Europeans love to sing together as a chorus because when we went
to Tallinn, Estonia in 1995, they had an International Chorus Competition and we recall they sang
at one beautiful park! Although they were poor, they knew how to enjoy life!

Dr. BB Lee; In place of Dr. S.C. Kim, I will give you a very simple and easy answer to you.
That is: just copy the link to this webpage and send it to him.
1. Right-click on the video screen (inside, not outside of it).
2. You will see a vertical menu coming up.
3. Among the menu, click the line "Copy Video URL".
4. Now, you have copied the link to this video on your clipboard (invisible to you).
5. Now, you write an e-mail and say "Here is the link to that chorus I talked to you about."
Ten, just below your line, put mouse cursor and right-click and chose "Past".
In this instance, the link is "https://youtu.be/JqprdyXkrMw" (This link shows up below your line.)
6. The receiver can click the link or, if the link does not work, ask him to copy the link
and inert at the address blank of his Internet browser. Then, he clicks "Enter", the video will show up.
This will be the video in Youtube.
Another choice will be to send him the entire webpage on our website.
To do that, 1. Click what is in the address space (at the top) and right-click and choose "Copy"
2. This is the link to our webpage of Dr. S.C. Kim.
"http://www.snuma.net/xe/index.php?mid=freeboard&document_srl=146390&comment_srl=146667&rnd=146667#comment_146667" This is rather long. You can get rid of some words in the link into a shorter one like below:
Just send this line above to him in your e-mail.
Now, he can see the whole webpage including all the comments
(including yours and my dumb political rant.) The latter may be better for your friend
because he can see what you had tried for him.
Of course, he will be able to see the video too.

Thanks, buddy, to teach me a new trick!
I didn't know there is such simple way to copy for its recycle. Will keep this instruction separately for the future use.
But the problem is my brain somehow doesn't hold the memory for such procedure/steps to take to proceed and soon forget.
So I write it/the procedure down separately for the future use, but also forget where I kept it among so many files- wind up I keep hundreds of such procedures in one file in these days with no further classification and go through each one of them to pick out the one I need but in many occasions I give up due to my impatience!!!
Warm regards,
BB
P.S. Dr. Kim sent it to me through the email last night so that I forwarded to Jovan, my young associate at Duke U.

Dr. Kim and friends,
I received a very interesting story/reply from my colleague, who is a Serbian, about this Niska Banja so that I would like to share with you all, as below;

Dear Dr. Lee,
Thank you SO much - you made my day sharing this song! I'm very familiar with it. It was written in 1927. The common misconception that this song is Romanian (as from the country Romania). The part of the song is actually written in Gypsy language. In Serbia, a world for Gipsy is "Rom" (that has nothing to do with country Romania). Gypsy (Serbian "Roms") are nomadic people without a country. They are considered a minority in most European countries. Unfortunately, they are usually living in lower socioeconomic settings, but have very rich spiritual life.
The song is about a spa-town in Serbia called Niška Banja ("Banja" is a world for a Spa). There are geothermal waters that are shown to be beneficial for health. It was a common practice that a doctor instead of prescribing medications actually prescribes 7-10 days of treatment in Spa (sometimes in Niška Banja). Other word "Niška" refers to the city of "Niš'. This old city has rich history as several Roman emperors were born there and played an important role during Byzantine as well.
In summary the song describes benefits of the Spa "Banja" in a modestly humoristic manner. Not sure what is this for but if you would like more traditional songs from the area I'd be happy to send them to you.
Hopefully one day we can go together and visit this place and few more that are interesting to see. Very rich history.
Hope you are doing great.
Sincerely,
-Jovan

Wow, what a rich history, Jovan, it makes me enjoy this chorus much more!
I certainly will share this story with the rest of alumni through their website, thanks!
So the word ‘Romani’ is originated from ‘Rom’! How about that! I learn every day.
Wonderful.

P.S. A few years ago I was invited to Romania by Romanian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery and had a chance to travel for a week throughout their country so that I learned about this complicated and delicate stories involved to Romanis but it is the first time to hear more from Serbian side.
